E. H. AULL. RDTOR. Entered at the Postoffice at New berry, S. C., as second class matter. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2. The Spartanburg Journal is ad vising the people of Spartanburg to buy everything they can in their own town. "Our citizens, and especially our women," it says, "ought to buy everything they can in Spartanburg instead of sending off for it. Do not assume without investigating that you cannot get what you want here. We have no doubt that many a dollar has been sent to the great cities to make purchases when the identical articles could have been bought at a Spartanburg store for the same or less money, also saving the express charges. Money sent away from here never comes back, and the com munity is impoverished just to that extent. If you spend your money in Spartanburg you may have a chance to make it back some day." The Journal speaks truth and itF words are just as applicable in New berry as in Spartanburg. This is the same doctrine we have been preach ing for many years. The citizen oi Newberry who sends out of Newber ry for something he could buy her( for the same money or possibly less. impoverishes the town just to tha. extent. Buy everything you can in Newberry. What helps the towr helps every citizen. Bring the Power to Newberry. The books of subscription will be opened on December second to the capital stock of the Parr Shoals Power company, of Newberry, the corporators being H. L. Parr, Z. F. Wright, W. G. Horseal, C. H. Cannon, W. K. Sligh and A. L. Scott. The company will develop the great water power on Broad river, near Peaks. furnishing electric cur rent for such cities and towns as may desire it, and which may guarantee to use enough of the current to jis tify carrying it to them. We hope Newberry will be among the cities to which the current will be carried. There are many enterprizes here which could use it to advantage, and it would build others, aiding in the rapid growth and development of Newberry as few other things have done during the past number of years. We are certain the people of New berry realize the great importance of this matter, and that every enterprise in Newberry which can use the cur rent to advantage will give its a,ctive support and encouragement to the en deavor to bring this power to New berry. Newberry needs it. Our cotton mills and other manufactur ing enterprises, and every business enterprise in Newberry can help to brinz it here. The Greenville News says that "the unexpected adjournment of the Pat terson murder trial in New York will revive the discussion of the ad visability of swearing an extra jurol to serve in the event of one man be ing disabled. All the work must be gin again, and it frequently happens in cases of less importance. Either the state or the defendant is likely to profit by the termination of the trial, and as a general rule the pros ecution feels the bad effect because its side is exposed, thus leaving anple time for new and manufactured evi dence for the defense before the sec ong hearing begins. Still, this is a matter for judicial consideration." While there are some good argu emnts on both sides of the question. it does seem that sonie plan could be devised under which it would not be necessary to adjourn a trial on account of the illness of one juror. Kind Words. We regard it a mistake on the part of the voters of Newberry, or rather an accident to have left Col. Aull off the delegation. We can't believe they meant it. In our view and we mean all we say, he was one of the ablest members of the last legisla ture in either end of the capitol. Laurensville Herald. E. H. Aull, of Newberry, is now a private citizen, his membership in the state. lislte hang expired. The Herald and News and Mr. Aull alone are the gainers, while the South Car olina legislature is the sufferer. El bert Aull is one of the biggest-heart ed men in the state-a gentleman. Gaffney Ledger. Col. E. H. Aull, editor of the New berry Heraild and News, announced last week that he was a private citi zen, as the terms of members of the general assembly begin on Monday following the general election. Col. Aull was a member of the house of representatives for two years, and Newberry never had a better repre sentative. He did more than any man they've ever sent from that coun ty. and it only justice to him to say so.-Bamberg Herald. There Were No Profits. 'Pa," said the speculator's son, ac cording to an exchange, "I want some money for a little speculation." "I am pleased, my boy," returned that father, as he fished a sovereign from his pocket, "to see that you are taking an interest in the business af fairs of life. Now, I won't ask you what this speculation is, but I will go halves with you on it. I will furnish the money and you engineer the deal. asd we will go halves on the profits. Of course, if there are none. I lose my money and you your time." "All right, pa. I'll w-ike the invest ment today and report progress to morrow. "The next evening, when the father returned home. he inquired about the "deal." "No good!" was the sententious re ply of the youth. "No good?" exclaimed the old man in surprise. "Yes, no good." replied the boy. "Never saw such decline in stock in my life. Shrunk quite out of sight. It was a good investment yesterday goods worth their face value-but today you couldn't give them away." "But for heaven's sake, George, what did you invest in?" "Theatre tickets for last night's performance." The old man thought very hard for a time, and then expressed himself to the effect that the boy was fitted for a company promoter rather than a speculatQr. Although Saxony is a small coun try and ranks merely as one of the petty states of Germany. yet the rown jewels belonging to the reign house are perhaps the richest and finest of any monarchy in Europe. save, possibly. Russia, and not least among the sacrifices that have fallen to the harsh lot of the ex-Saxon Crown Princess. is the knowledge that she will never be able to adorn herself with these superb crown jewels, of which she would have had the use had she become queen of Saxony. Another case is devoted to emeralds, most of which are superb, while rubies-one of them 48 carats and another 59 carats-fill a third glass case. The gala decorations of the full dress of the former electors of Saxony consists of buttons. col lar, sword, hilt and scabbard all of diamonds, three of the stones in the epaulettes weighing 5o carats each. But the gem of mose unique interest and singularity is a green brilliant weighing 40 carats, prized rather for the rarity of its color than for its size.
