Druggist Says the Flower Attracts And Then Poisons Them. Springteid Journal. A local druggist has fmund a newx agent fo)r the destruction of flies tha for activity and effectiveness dis counts anything heretofore offered f,r that purpose. And not only is it harmless, but it is a thing of beau tv as w-. After selling annually thousands of sheets of fly paper ol the sticky and poisonous varieties and a ton more or less of insect pow der the new antidote for the pest bids fair to supercede all previous methods with him and those of his friends whc are on the secret. For several days the druggist, whc is a lover of flowers. has had upon his front cases bunches of sweet pea of a variety grown originally in Cal ifornia and but recently cultivated in this section of the country. Each morning after opening up the storc he has found collected around the base of the vessel containing the pea! quite an accumulation of dead flies For the first day or so he regarded the mass of defunct dipterous in sects as an accidental gathering in the neighborhood of the flowers but cu riosity prompted him later to watcl the conduct of the few flies left in the store. It was observed when the peas were freshly picked that imme diately after their being placed ir the vases those flies in the vicinit3 swarmed upon the petals and pro ceeded to fasten themselves there Shortly afterward they fell frorr their positions dead. It is presumed that the odor o: the peas attracted them first and thai afterward they absorbed some poias onous exudation that the flowers pos -sess and died in consequence. So fa as known the peas possess no toxic effect upon the human being. Mrs. Russell Sage is seriously il at her home, in New York, as th< result of a fall.
