Richmond News Leader. it is iortunate that women what ever else they may have lost in pro cess of modern development. retain their powers of deception and con cealment and defy the closest scru tiny to discover when they are in love and when they are trying to fcoul us. Every now and then some body announces that one woman can detect the feelings of another, per sonal signs and symptons. and even some men writers are presumptu ou: enough to proclaim like occult p:wers. This is all stuff and non sensc. It is fortunate for organized society that the feminine feelings and emotions are not so obvious as these wise-acres tell us they are. If wo men's hearts were worn on their sleeves and everybody could know when they are in love and when they are not, there would be a good deal of shaking up in our social fabrics and half the fun of life would be lost. Sometimes. however, the faculty of deception has embarrassing and disastrous consequences. A case re cently reported from Tennessee il lustrates this. A young clergyman was engaged to be married to a girl of nineteen. , Like many young clergymen, he had full appreciation of his own attractions, professional and personal. and like all young men, a high estimate of his own acuteness and knowledge of womankind. He believed the girl to be desperately in love with him. and her family and friends shared his opinion. Last week he went to her home to marry her. Two nights before the day set for the wedding the girl stepped out of I the back door and disappeared. She left a note in which she said that b tween her proposed groom a,nd the bottom of the Tennessee river she preferred the river. She realized that she had gone too far too far to retire with propriety and had decided to es cape from the entanglement by the somewhat drastic but undeniably ef-t fectiv:e scheme of drowning herself. t Therefore she had done it, and left< a warning to all girls against carry ing flirtations too far or indulging tooi freely in the delightful exercise of fooling young clergymen. The man is reported suffering from nervous prostration. We, have no doubt that he was a very much sur prised citizen when he discovered that instead of being the object of adora tion the girl had made him think him self, he was the victim of a feeling I very much like detestation. He will get over it. of course. They ahw:ays do. So far as he is concerned, prob ably he will know more than he did.
