GENERAL NEWS NOTES. Items of More or Less Interest Con densed Outside of The State. Most of the Fall River. Mass.. cot ton mills have resumed operations after a ten days' shut down. The op eratives. it is reported. of whom there are more than 25.ooo in the cloth mills. are restless over the situation. They have sustained a loss in wages during the spring and summer amounting to a reduction of forty per cent. The textile unions expect a revision in wages will be made which will be a reduction of at least ten per cent. Henry P. Williams one of the most popular citizens of Cleveland. Miss.. was shot and killed on Main street on Monday by James S. Wakefield. Williams was accompanied by his wife when the tragedy occurred. The killing resulted from a trivial affair. Dr. Edwin A. Alderman. president of Tulane university. New Orleans. has accepted the presidency of the University of Virginia. Fire in Covington. Ga.. late Satur day night resulted in the destruction of property amounting to $125.000. with $6o.ooo insurance. The dead body of a fashionably dressed woman was found in. a hotel at St. Louis on Monday. where she had registered on July 7. Two bot tles were found by the side of the bed, one of which contained alcohol and the other an unknown drug. It was ascertained that the woman was Mrs. M. K. Dantes. who left Norfolk, Va., recently. Her brother-in-law, says that he had furnished her money for a wedding trousseau and a trip to St. Louis where she went with the intention of being married. At the republican convention in West Virginia this week Senator S. B. Elkins, who is a son-in-law of Henry G. Davis. the democratic nom inee for the vice-presidency. was chosen temporary chairman. Mr. El kins said his father-in-law should have been chosen at the head of the ticket instead of a man without a record, and hoped.that his being named sec ond on the ticket would not beguile West Virginia into going democratic this year. That was about the sub stance of his address. Win. Syphert. a private. on Tues day night shot and killed a sergeant in an infantry regiment stationed at Plattsburg. N. Y. The trouble was caused by the sergeant's attentions to the private's wife. A man in the Virginia penitentiary under sentence of thirteen years for train wrecking has been pardoned by Governor Montague on the strong recommendation of the Ohio State Insane asylum. at which institution he has been under treatment with a fair prospect of being cured. Ohio. died on Tues day. The grand jury' oif Burlington cotun ty. N. Y.. have returned three hills of indictmenm against three -ere undler arrest for conunectibon with the assault upon Mrs. Elsie T. Biddle. The maximum penialty wvhich can he given is 49 years. The grand jury have recommended that :he puxnishment for rape be increased to capital punish ment or to imprisonment fo'r any term of years in the discretion of the trial jury. Senator D. B. Hill has given out an interview in wvhich he says: "I am gratified that the convention so en thusiastically endorsed the brave and manly stand of Judge Parker. and that the whole country has so favorably received it. The financial question is now entirely out of the campaign and the republicans are powerless to drag it in. The road to a successful cam paign has been cleared." Senator Hoar met a friend on the street in Washington one day who stopped to inform him that a very dear friend was seriously ill with ap pendicitis. Senator Hoar was very solicitous and determined to write a note of smypathy at once. H e had hardly finished the note before word came to him that his friendl was ill with acute indigestion instead of ap pendicitis. Senator Hloaar tore up the nrst note. ard sent the following in its place: "Dear A\.- -I am v'erv sorry to hear that vou are ill. but am glad that thc trouble is with the table of contents rather than with the appendix.'' The hre was evidently of in cendiary origin. a' previotus attempt having been made to burn the house, kerosene being poured over the kitchen floor and a match applied. While Ir. R. 0. Brock. of Pendle ton. was driving his family home from Seneca on Sunday the mules which he had hitched to the surrey became un manageable and backed the vehicle off the high stone abutment on the bridge at Cherrys. Mrs. Brock, was considerably bruised, one of the mules was killed and the surrey was dle molished. Sallie Love was shot and killed at Pacolet by her husband. lames Love. I who is now in the Spartanburg jail. A contract has been let for a new school building in Pickens to co,t $10.000. The annual address before the State Press association. in st'ssion at White Stone springs. was delivered on Wed nesday night by the -Iwn John Tem ple Graves. editor of the Atlanta News. The annual banquet was served last night. The editors report that they are having a very enjoyable meeting. It is reported from Washington that Senator B. R. Tillman. who took the stump for Bryan in both his cam paigns. will give Judge Parker the same assistance. "It had been my in tention to take no part in the canvass. for my throat is in bad condition." said Senator Tillman. "but now. un less the doctor forbids it. and if the party wants me. I will work as hard as I did in 1896 and i9oo. Then I was a silver man: now I'll work for well. work to beat Roosevelt. "Anti Roosevelt' is my platform. I am for a return to constitutional government and law. I'm tired of imperialism at home. as well as abroad." Chairman D, L. Sinkler. of the Charleston county democratic execti tive committee. has extended Senator Tillman an invitation to address the Charleston democracy on the occa sion of the campaign meeting on July 29. Jack Byrum. a white man. was ar rested in Chester. wanted in two states for murder and was taken to Texas by the sheriff of Van Zandt county. His fiddling led to his arrest. SomI time ago a Chester man was iI Texas and attended a nddle contest and mentioned a fiddler in his county who coulld heat any of the contes tants. The town authorities have passed an ordinance that it will be unlawful for one to ride a wheel on the side walks. Floyd Tompkins. in dc livering a commencement address the other day, when the temperature in the room was anything but comfort able, told the graduating class that he had come to keep them awake. "But," he said, "I don't wish to have the same experience that a min ister in Scotland had one very hot day. "He had been speaking fbr half an hour when he noticed that his hear ers were nearly all asleep. " 'Come!' he shouted, 'wake up!' You ought to be ashamed of your selves to fall aslep in church.
