The Saluda river was so low at Holly's Ferry on Friday that the fer ry was unable to cross. breaking the record for nifty-nine years. Mr. L. A. Singley is located at R. C. Organization Perfected-Work To Be Commenced on Hall at Early Day. The Fraternity Hall company has been organize with a capital of ten thousand dollars. its purpose being to erect a handsome hall on the land owned by Hon. George S. Mower op posite the Newherry hotel. The meeting of the stockholders of the company was held in city council chamber Friday afternoon. Dr. George B. Cromer was chosen chair man and Mr. . H. Hunt secretary. The following board of directors was chosen: George S. Mower. T. J. Mc Crary. 0. McR. Holmes. I. H. Hunt. W. E. Pelham. The directors met at 9 o':ock Sat urday morning and elected the follow ing officers: President and Treasurer-George S. Mower. Vice-president-T. j. McCrary. Secretary-I. H. Hunt. It is the intention of the company to go to work on the erection of the hall at a very early day. The Knights of Pythias and the Masons will have halls in the building. Scholarship Examinations. Examinations were held Friday for :he two vacant scholarships accredited to Newberry county in Winthrop col lege. at Rock Hill, and three Clemson ;cholarships for this county created by the last legislature. The exami nations were held in the Boundary street graded school building under the direction of County' Superinten ient Eugene S. Werts. Derrick. who has the ummer school in charge. extends a :ordial invitation to the trustees and teachers of the county to be present. and hopes as many of them as can 1o so will attend. Dr. Scherer is an rator whose ability is recognized throughout the south and his address will without doubt be oi a very high >rder of excellence. Another Whitmire Meeting. There has been some talk of hold ing another county campaign meeting at Whitmire. It will be recalled that the county campaign opened at that place on the Fourth of July, but on account of the number athletic ports which had already been arrang ed in honor of the day. the candidates did not get an oportunity to address the people of Whitmire. Nothing definite has yet been de :-ided in regard to the meeting. but County Chairman Cunningham has decided to have it held on some Sat rday. Th e people .of Whitmire were disappointed that they were not able to hear the candidates at the previous meeting and are anxious for another meeting to be held at Whit Mr. Mower's Withdrawal. The following is from the Sumter Herald: Hon. Gorge S. Mower has with drawn from the race for the state sen ate in Newberrv county, and the con test is now between Messrs. Cole. L. Blease and A\rthur Kibler. It is dis tinctly to be regretted that Mr Mower has taken this action. His county and state suffer a great loss in being leprived of his valuable services. Whichever his successor may be of the tvo candidates named. may do as well as Mr. Mower in the senate, though .. e dobi. They can not do better. The ladies of the Central Methodist church will serve ice cream and cake at the church on Friday night from six to nine o'clock. The Overhead Bridge. The bridge on Boundary street or the two railroads is to be put in good condition by the two railroads. The bridge has for some time been in bad condition, and some time ago the matter was brought to the atten tion of city council and council re quested the railroads to put on new looring and new balustrades. The material to be tused in making the re pairs is already at hand and work will be commeiiced very soon. The whole city will be gratified to learn that the bridge is to be repaired and improved. It will be a big,.im provement. Date Changed. The date for the holding of the Sunday School convention has been changed from August 10 and 11 to Agtst 11 and 12. This change was made on account of a conflict with a meeting to be held at Lebanon. The program for the Sunday School con vention has already been published. Zion A. M. E. church on Sunday. the 17th. and at Prown chapel. H-elena. on Sunday night. and to deliver a lecture at Helena on Monday night. Death of Miss Lizzie Hunt. Miss Lizzie Hunt. daughter of Mr. Henry Hunt. died on June 30th. She was born June 27th. 1872. She was a consistent member of St. Peters church. which she joined in early life. She had many ivarm friends, who w.re paine by the news of her death. NOTICE.
