During a heavy thunderstorm in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Ora Bradley. wife of a street car con ductor. was killed by being struck by lightning. It is reported from Washington that President Rosevelt has offered Paul Morton. formerly of Nebraska. but now a business man of Chicago. the position of secretary of th-: navy. Two persons were burned to death and six others injured in a fire that partially destroyed a saloon and boarding house in Cleveland. Ohio. on Monday. Col. Edward Emerson. Jr.. one of the New York World's correspon dents in the far east. has been killed. It is reported that he was shot by retreating Russians. who mistook him for a spy. Adolph Tancob is under arrest at Fort William. Winnipeg. Manito ba. charged with incendarism. HeI has confessed to burning buildings valued at over $2.ooo.000. including the city hall and others. It has been stated detinitely that Representative Victor Ii. Metcalf. of the Third California district, will succeed Secretary George B. Cortel you as the head of the department of commerce and labor. A negro was killed. one white man was fatally injured and another ser iously hurt by a blast at a mine in Toccoa. Ga.. set off by lightning dur ing a severe storm on Tuesday after noon. Two gamblers who had been quar reling came upon each other in a saloon in Marion, Ill., when one shot the other three times and mortally wounded him. The dying man re turned the fire, bullet for bullet, kill ing his antagonist. A painter named Binns narrowly escaped being lynched in New York on Monday. It was said that he en ticed a small girl into the doorway of a house and was abusing her when lie was interrupted. A crowd got him in hand and had already got a clothesline to swing him up when the police interfered. General Bell, of Colorado. in an swer to the statement that he had given out an interview saying the state of Colorado would soon have to be put under martial law. emphat ically denies that he ever gave out uch an interview, and says there is o need of declaring martial law in Colorado. and that the whole state racitcally has been cleared up by his deportation system. The St. Louis World's Fair author ities have arranged for a special dis play in celebration of the Fourth of July, and are expecting an attendance of a quarter of a million on that day. Fire destroyed the best portion of the business section of McComb City, Pike county. Miss., on Tuesday morning. The loss is placed at $300 00, with insurance at one-half. An interesting reature of the clos ing exercises of the V. M. I. at Lex- . ington, Va.. this week, was the pre sentation to all of the survivors of the famous New Market charge by the cadets of the institute with cross es of honor for their heroism at the battle. Of the 293 cadets who took part in the battle of New Mar ket. which was fought May 15. 1864. only 187 are now knowvn to be living. In a speech before an anti-Parker convention in New York on Monday night WV. J. Bryan strongly denounc ed Parker as the candidate for the democratic nomination. "I charge here." he said. "that while Parker has concealed his views from the peo ple he has made them known to the men behind him. What is Mr. Bel mont's consideration in the Parker candidacy? He is too shrewd a financier to invest his money without being sure of the return of the goods. It has been a fraudulent campaign. They have openly bought men at conventions and any man who coun tenances that work does not deserve the office of president." Mr. Bryan received an ovation from his anti Parker audience. Corn and cotton were wa.z. up by the roots. In a severe storm in several sections of Spartanburg county on Sunday night. a negro woman was killed by lightning. several houses were struck. and crops were injured by the hail. The dead body oi a negro was found in a ditch on a street in Spar zanburg on Monday m,-rning. It is thought the negro succumbed to an acute attack of heart disease. George Gossett. a Confederate veteran. living at Pacolet. committed suicide on Tuesday by cutting hi throat. The cause is given as an in herited tendency to melarncholia. The Columbia city police have ,eeu raiding the gamblers recently, and there were a half dozen cases for trial on Tuesday morning, but there was little or no --vidence and most of ae cases were dismissed. Rev. Vilim H. Bowers. rector of the Church of the Epiphany, at Wash ington. D. C.. has accepted the call to the rectorship of St. Pauls church. Charleston. and will assume charge of his duties on September i5th. .%r. J. A. Pearson, an influential citizen of Summerville. was struck by lightning and killed. while in a :ield on his piantation about nine iles from the town on Tuesday af ernoon. He leavn a widow and three small children. A negro. who was standing nearby at the tine had his hair burnt off hiE head. Former Governor John C. Shep pard. in giving out a statement say ing that he had definitely decided not o run for congress in the Second dis trict, said: "I do not wish it under stood that I have abated in the slightest degree my interest in pub ic matters, nor do I wish it to be understood that I have abandoned aspiration for further association with the public service." Pat McGee, a negro laborer em ployed on a farm near Aiken. was struck by lightning during a storm there on Sunday night and was knocked insensible for some time. %hen he regained his senses he ound that the bolt had struck him Dn the right thigh and made a 'burnt" streak down his lett leg, and, eeaving his body. had torn his shoes An old negro living in Greenville oounty went to the city to get his on, a boy about 15 years of age., and take h1im home, the boy having un off. During a severe electric storm in York county on last Saturday night. aitt five-year-old daughter of Mr. [hn Plaxico. who lives near the county seat. wvent into the room ,were the telephone wvas situated, when the lightning struck the wire and part of the bolt passing to the ild she was knocked down and burned on the breast and down her leg. C. Each bunch had twenty steers averaging 1-1oo pounds each. for which 4 1-2 per pound. f. o. b was received. Before any of these steers were shipped there were sixty on of them in one pasture, all de horned, and they had very much the appearance of a herd of buffaloes on the plains. Boyd Evans the Favorite of the Democracy of Marion. The Marion county democratic convention adopted the following res olutions unanimously: "XVhereas, W. Boyd Evans is a can didate for railroad commissioner. Re -;olved. That we. the democracy of \farion county, in convention assem bled, endorse his candidacy and com nend him to the voters of the state as one qualified to perform the duties of the office with credit to himself and fidelity to the state." The democratic voters of Kirby township in Marion county where Mr. Eva'ns, now a lawyer of Columbia. was born, passed the following: "Whereas. W. Boyd Evans is an nounced as a candidate for railroad commissioner: and. whereas, we, the lemocratic voters of the township in which he was born and reared, know ing him to be qualified in every par ticular to fill the office to which he aspires with credit to himself and honor to the state: therefore, be it "Resolved, That we. the democratic voters of Kirby township, in meeting assembled, do endorse his candidacy, and instruct the delegates elected to the county convention to offer suita ble resolutions commending him to the citizens of this state for their sup port."
