STATE GOOD ROADS ASSOCIATION TO MEET. President F. H. Hayatt Appeals for a Full Attendance at the Approaching Meet ing January 19th. The State - I have asked the cities and towns of the State to send a representative to meet with the county officials in our State good roads association which meets here on Tuesday, the 19th inst., at 12 o'clock in the county court house. In case some of them have not received the invitation I hope they will take this article as such. I am now satisfied that we will have the largest attendance that - has ever been held in the State on the good roads question. I am re ceiving letters- by the dozen from almost every section of the State saying that their county and town will be represented by leading busi ness en. In some instances the entire board of county commission ers wiH be here. and I do wish that each and every county would send their full board of commissioners as this question of good roads is of such vital importance to the future prosperity of our country I -would that we could get every section of the country aroused on the subject. The world has its eye turned to wards the south, as it is generally conceded that the south is one of the.most desirable sections of the country to live in, and has the brightest future of any section of the country. Farming lands for the last yeat or two have increased in value from 25 to 5o per cent. The high priced cotton has come to stay for some time, capital seeking investment ,is drifting this way. We can readily see that it behooves us as -farmers, as merchants, as manufacturers and every other line of business to bestir ourselves and be doing, so that we may be able to meet the demand, and as for South Carolina I know of no State, taking' everything into consideration, that has a brighter future. I know whereof I speak as my business puts me in touch with every sec stion of the State and I am satisfied that, taking our State as a whole, it has never been more prosperous. In order to have free rural delivery we will have to have better roads to get them, and to retain them as there are sections of the State now in which the government would establish free rural delivery but that the roads are not in con dition to be used. Mr. Editor, there is so much to be said along this tine that it would be utterly impossible for me to go into all the details and advantages of good roads in one article, so I will close by saying that the general public is becoming interested in road * building and -for the year 1904 it will make the greatest progress iir * the history of this State. Augusta Chronicie, 1 2th. The following resolution in me mory of Lieutenant General James Longstreet, introduced by Captain Win. Dunbar, was adopted last night by Camp 435, U. C. V., by a un animous and rising vot e: "Resolved, by the: Confederate Survivors' association, Camp 435. United Confederate Ve:erans, That we deplore the death o& Lieutenant' General James Longstreetl. We re call how, in tibe opening of t1he cam paign of 1862. his stubborv gallan try saved the arm-v of Northern Virginia for its long career of glory; how, later in the same campaign, his superb strategy rescued Stone wall Jackson from the swarming thousands a.bout to overwhelm him; bow, in 1863, he flew to the aid of the heroic army of Tennessee, and with it won the resplendent victory of Chickamanga. In short, we know him by the proud title of the War Horse of the Confederacy, a title worthily bestowed by General Ro bert E. Lee himself. He wasa grand soldier, a Solomon in council, and a Samson in the field. "Resolved, That these resolutions be inscribed on a special page of oui minutes, and that a copy thereof be transmitted by our adjutant to the family of the valiant dead."
