HIS FAREWELL AT APPOMATTOX. General Gordon's Eloquent and RMnging *ords On The Last Battlefield Of The Great War. Edwin D. Newton, M. D., Late Surgeon A. N. V.. in Augusta Chronicle. After the death of General"Stone wall" Jackson, Gen. John B. Gor don may be said to have been the "right hand" of General Lee, owing to his thorough knowledge of strat egy, his habits of watchfulness of the mo,ements of the enemy, and the irresistible dash with which he led his daring veterans upon the field. General Gordon was a born sol dier, a true son of Mars. He was as modest as he was brave and of course,: in his recent lectures did not tell of his own many deeds of valor, as they were witnessed or known to the veterans of Lee's army. I was at Appomattox and beg leate to mention a few incidents connected with the gallant Gordon: By order of Sergeant Lafayette Guild, medical director of the Army of Northern Virginia, xho had im provised a small field hospital for the wounded, of our last "skirmish" on the morning of the surrender. On the day following, while taking a little rest from our labors when in conversation with my brother medical officer, we were most agree ably surprised by a salutation from General Gordon, as he rode up to our campfire. General Gordon and I were college boys together at the University of Georgia, he a senior and I a Freshman. He addressed me in his old, familar manner: "N:d, get your horse and ride with me, I am now on my way to make a last address to my soldiers of che Second corps and the right wing of the army." In a few moments we were facing the soldiers who loved him so well and were ever proud to follow him in battle. Stil in his saddle and surrounded by his staff, all of whom were mounted, General Gordon ad vanced a pace to the front, and with all the winning grace of a soldier, removed his hat and addressed his veterans. I can only give the ideas in the crude form, for the address, with the lapse of years is now but a memory of this sad and eventful occasion: "My Countrymen and Fellow Soldiers: Already has cur great commander, Gen. Robert E. Lee, spoken an affectionate farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia. No pen or words can add to his touch ing and patriotic address. I ~oeg, however, as your late corps com mander, the privilege of a few words in this sad bour of parting. Let me assure you that my heart goes out to each and every one of this gallant corps in this dark hour of disaster. Do not doubt, my fellow soldiers, that the future historian will give to you a full measure of your marti al glory. Yon battle flags, now furled, tell of your heroic achieve mentst Thousands of your corn rades, in almost. every plain in his toric old Virginia, sleep the sleep of death, yet the death of glory. But few survive -the fierce conflict of civil war. And only a remnant is before me today, to tell the story of the battles :cd privations of the Second Army cerps-:the old corps of Stonewall Jackson. This dorps and this army of Northern Virginia *will be remembered as long as the names of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee will be treasured by a grateful people. Overwhelmed by superior numbers and almost in exhaustible resources, together with the untiring energy and dauntless courage which has ever marked the military movements of the great leader of the Federxal army, General Ulysses S. Grant, the army of North ern Virginia, an army of heroes, decmatedAby attle, disease and privations, through four years of almost continuous warfare, will now disband, never perhaps, to meet again. iWith our last parting let me impress upon you one or two thou ghts, which I trust will go with you to your homes and firesides. Re member, that in God's providence we have surrendered not to a for eign foe, but to our own country men. In the exhibition of your fortitude in the face of di6aster, ever be as great and as good as citizei:s as you have been great and heroic as soldiers. Ever be the model citi zen, as you have been the model soldier. Obey the civil law, no mat ter how odious the same may be temporarily. Discharge every (1.1ty as a citizen to your respective states and ,to the general government. Sustain the poor, help the feeble, and succor the unfortunate in your midst, and by so doing you will command not onlv the admiration and respect of the world, but win the friendshio and confidence of those who are now your political enenn: es. "Fellow soldiers, with my love and my benediction resting upon each and every one within. the sou nd of my voice, I now bid you fare well. May Go$ in his infinite mercy and kindness, protect and bless you and yours, now and forever." No words can truly express the touching eloquence and tender pa thos of the speaker or paint the scenes of that sad parting. It was like a last good bye from brother to brother. With moistened eyes the veterans grasped the hand of their gallant leader. They retire, form in groups, and speak in subdued tones. Comrade and comrade shake hands and paLt. Slowly they return to their bivouacs in the open field, where stand the stacked arms in mute eloquence, the bayonets clasp each other as if in the last embrace of death. The battle flags, rent with shot and shell, are now furled forever. The Second Army corps of the Army of Northern Virginia is no more, except as it shall ever live in history and in story, in poesy and in song. A Prisoner in Her Own House. Mrs. W. H.
