REW RURAL MAIL ROUTE. It Will Serve The Utopia Section, Going Into Effect February 1st-C. G. Blease Carrier. A new rural mail route, to be known as Route No, 4, has been es tablished from Newberry, to go into effect an the first day of February. Mr. C. G. Blease has been appoint ed carrier. He will resign as magis trate's constable, his resignation to take effect on the ist of February, and will be succeeded by Mr. B. A. Havird. The new route will extend from Newberry to Dr. W. E. Lake's at Julia, thence to the right to Utopia bridge, thence to the left to J. M. Nichols', thence to the right by New Chapel church between B. L. Dominick's and P. J. Stephens', thence to the right to Z. W. Tay lor's and to the right by Langford's mill to Newberry. This is a route which has been greatly need.d and the people tobe served will be well pleased to know that it is assured. Appointments on Board of Health. Two new memders of the board of health have been appointed by Mayor Earhardt and the appoint ments were confirmed by council at its meeting on Wednesday night. Mr. R. W. Davis was appointed from Ward 4 to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of Mr. W. T. Tarrant. There be ing no member on the board from Ward i. Mr. M. M. Harris was ap -pointed from that ward. Ward i -was given representation and the number of members of the board increased under an opinion by the city attorney. The full board as at present con stituted is as follows: Ward i, M. M. Harris; Ward 2, E. Cabaniss; Ward 3, Edw. R. Hipp; Ward 4, R. W. Davis; Ward 5, R. B. Lomi nick; Town at large, Dr. P. G; Imesor. The Kayors Court. There have been only a few minoi cases in the Mayor's court during the past several days. Ben Caldwell, colored, was sentenced to .pay a fine of $5, or to serve 30o days for public indecency, and to pay a fine of $25 or to serve 30 days for resisting arrest, Policeman Frauk lin having had a -good deal of trouble in getti::g him to the guard house. R. G Strother, white, was fined $3. f>r being drunk and dis order:y, and two negroes were given $5, or 3.? days for loaning. - Gin House Burned. The gin house and engine room, with two bales of cotton and a quantity of cotton seed, the property of Mr. J. H. Wicker, in No. 8 Township, were burned at about sundown on Wednesday afternoon. SA Small Fire. The fire department was called out at about 3.30 o'clock on Wed nesday morning to extinguish a fire in the cellar of J. W. Kibler & Co.'s warehouse. Messrs. Kibler & Co. were ripening bananas by means of an oil stove and in some way the stove turned over and started the fire. The ban;anas were considerably smoked and it is very likely that the smoke and the water completely destroyed all those af fected. The loss is estimated at about $1oo. The Cough Season. The Movements of Many P.ople, Newber rians and Those Who Visit Newberry. Mr. J. H. Hair was in Columbia this week. Senator George S. Mower was in Columbia this week. Miss Sarah Berry Robinson has gone to Raleigh to attend King's Business college. Mr. J. E. Buzhardt has resigned his school at Mullins on account of ill-health and will be at home for some time. Grand Master Cole. L. Blease went to Noodruff on Wednesday, where Wednesday night he attended a public installation of Odd Fellows' officers and banquet. Mrs D. L. Boozer, Sr., went to Columbia on Wednesday, where she will make her future home. She was accompanied by Mr. Eugene Boozer and Dr. D. L. Boozer. Dr. Boozer will return to Newberry and resume his p-actice in dentistry as soon as his health: will permit. VARIOUS AND ALL ABOUT. Mrs. S. A. Merchant, of Whit mire, is very ill. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. S. Langford will celebrate their silver wedding this evening. While Auditor Cromer is out in the county taking returns there will be some one in the office to attend to the business here. The Rev. S. H. Zimmerman has: moved into the house on College hill formerly occupied by Prof. S. J. Derrick, until the completion of the new Methodist parsonage. Constable Perry followed several jugs of liquor on the Southern to Greenwood on Wednesday, seizing a quantity of it when he reached Greenwood. It was addressed to negroes. The board of trustees of New berry college will meet in Columbia on the 12th of January to elect a successor to President George B. Cromer. whose resignation takes effect next July. The condenser ordered by the commissioners of public works some time ago has been placed in the power house. It will take the place of the pump now in use. having a greater capacity. With a ct.ns' meeting in the opera house this afternoon and a play with elaborate electrical effects tonight, it might be w:ell for council to get in those fire escapes recommended by the last citizens' meeting this morning. The weather was bitterly cold T Cuesday and Wednesday and at Itimes during these two days there was every appearance of snow. Yesterday, howeuer, the weather had moderated and it was raining. The weather prophets have been kept guessing. City council on Wednesday night again deadlocked on the election of a fourth policeman, Mr. B. E. Koon receving 3 votes and Mr. P. B. Hutchison receiving the other three votes. Mr. Koon continues to hold the job by appointment. It was agreed by council that an elec tion for the place should not be ent ered upon when any member was absent. A New Firm. ~! ,hn M. The Adjourned Meeting to Hear The Report of Committee Appointed by Meeting on Tuesday. The committee appoitted by the citizens' meeting held on Tuesday afternoon to report to an adjourned meeting a memorial to be presented to council touching upon the license ordinance recently passed by coun cil, met in council chamber yester day afternoon to investigate the matter and to prepare a report. The report will be heard at a citizens' meeting to be held in the opera house at 4 o'clock this after noon, for which the following call has been issued: CITIZENS' MEE9TING. The adjourned citizens' meeting, provided for at a meeting of citizens January 5th, is hereby called to be held in the opera house at 4 o'clock Friday atternoon, January~ Sth, to hear the report of the committee appointed by that meeting. Geo. B. Cromer. Chairman. FIRE ESCAPE WANTED. Citizens' Meeting Recommends That Coui cil Provide More Exits For the Opera House. At the citizens' meeting held in the opera house on Tuesday after noon Dr. James McIntosh moved that city council be requested to provide, at as early date as possible, fire escapes for the opera houee here. Dr. McIntosh said that the recent theatre horror in Chicago had taught a lesson which should not be overlooked. Very often he had seen the Newberry opera house packed with people and each time' he had thought of the insufficient exits and the fearful results which would ensue from a panic caused by a fire alarm. He thought this was a matter which should be attended to at once. The motion was unanimously adopted. ROMEO AND JULIET. simveue's Production In The Opera House Tonight Promises to be Well Worth Seeing. Simvelle's production of Romeo and Juliet, in the opera house here tonight, pro-nises to be wenl worth seeing. The universal verdict of the press where, the. performance has b)een presented during this sea? son is that it is splendid. The Greensboro, N. C., Record of November 27th says: "It has been some years sine Romeo and Juliet was seen here, Last night the Simelle Co. pre sented it at the Grand Opera House to a most cultured audience of larger proportions than is usually seen there at this time of the year. Louis ~N. Mortelle made a very good Romeo and Miss Clarke's interpretation of Juliet was excel lent. The costuming was excellent and the play was fairly well staged.'' This will be the first presentation of the play in Newberry in a good many years. The indications are that a large audience will see the play tonight. Card of Thank. Pleasant Entertainment By Literary So rosis-Musical Recitals-Citizens IM-eeting-Personal. Prosperity. January 7.-The Literary Sorosis gave an entertain ment at the city hall on New Year's evening. The club was met by an immense audience and everybody was well pleased. Mrs. J. D. Quattlebaum will have a musical recital in the hall next Friday evening, January 8, and Mrs. J. F. Browne will have hers the fol lowing Friday evening, January r5. Messrs Morris and Wicker retire from business with the new year. Mr. S. D. Duncan, their successor, continues the business in the same store room. Many a comment is made on the weather; The hopes and fears and doubts about the grain are many, but all accord it fine slaughtering weather. Miss Lucille Wise, of Saluda, is visiting relatives and friends. Capt. and Mrs. T. J. Lyons, of Cartersville, Ga., visited relatives here this week. One year ago a citizens meeting decided to nominate town officers by primary. The citizens' will ar range to carry out the wishes of the people. A Good Showing. The statement of the Newberry Savings Bank, showing the condi tion of the institution at the close of business December 31, 1903, shows a very healthy condition of affairs. The deposits amount to more than $2o6,ooo while the pro fits arregate more than $21,000. The bank is under the management of gentlemen of excellent business judgment and ability. Two masked men walked into J. S. Dickson's store near Society Hill at about 8 o'clock Wednesday night and at the point of a gun made him unlock his safe and hand over the contents, something over $200.
