Why Not Our Bread? "It-having been demonstrated that South Carol'na is a great corn pro ducing ? State, our farmers should ?now demonstrate that they can raise their own bread, as well as their own hog and' hominy. Mankind a greatest struggle has been to obtain bread. The failure to obtain it has caused wars and overturned gov ernments and destroyed dynasties. The world for ages has been seeking chead bread, and the cry for it is ?iill heard, not only in this favor ed land, but in every part of the globe. With all of our complex and ad vanced civilization the cry for chea^ bread is still heard, and when we all pass off the stage of human ac tion those we leave behind us will find one of the greatest problems left 'them to solve is haw to make bread economically and plentifully. Wheat in all ages of the world has been ithe chief .broad crop, and we suppose will be to the~ end of time No other crop is adopted to such a wide ranee of soil and territory. It is grown almost evreywhere, and f >r that reason is the most valuable crop known to man. It is said that each year the world consumes more 'than three billion bushels of wheat. In the face of facts like the above it behooves tae South to raise its own bread, and she will when ou'r.farmers fully real ize 'the great advantage and great value of'diversified farming. Some writer has said that diversified farming is the only key that will un lock the chest of gold that lies hid den in every acre of our land. That this is true is fully attested by tfce success of those farmers who have practiced diversified farming. I Having removed our corn cribs from the West, we will soon re move our smoke house from the same quarter. The day is at hand when the South will no longer see:< its hominy or its hog in other lands, for she is going to make these things at home. Then why shou'1 she not remove her granary from tne West too, and make her own bread 1 at home. When these things came to pass, then, indeed, will the Soutn | become that happy and prosperous land that she was intended to be by the reator Cwhen he created htr House of l^ortls in Danger. In spite of rumors to the con trary the conference between the lords and commons over the veto question has ended in a. disagree ment. Perhaps that is just as well for a compromise ou a question in which principle is involved is usual ly unsatisfactory to all concerned. Now the matter will have to be threshed out in another general elec tion in the near future, and the probability is that the Liberals will be returned with an increased ma jority. If such should prove the case drastic, dealings with the lords would naturally follow. With characteristic blindness to their own true interests and those of the people the lords have persist ently blocked the way of reform, and now the inevitable judgment awaits them. The whole question 's of more ithan passing interest to Americans because of the growing discontent with ^the present method of choosing United States Senators. While che question with us is not nearly so acu'te as the British find theirs jet the feeling exists that di rect or popular election of senators will prove an advantage in many Ways. The House of Lords are in danger. England, while having a monar chical form of government has in fact one of the most Demopratic gov ernments in the world. The House of Lords seem to have lost sight of this and have determined by ob structing reforms which the people are demanding, to commit political suicide. The indications are that in the near future the present heredi tary House of Lords will be abolish ed and a Senate similar to ours, with i:he members elected by popular vote will take its place. It is a wonder that the House of Lords has stood as k ?ns.' as it has, but it is n.ow doomed. ? Some or the Benson* Why. During 'the recent meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolu tion in Orangeburg, we heard a num ber of gentlemen discussing the ques tion of hospitality, and the belilf among them was that it is one of the virtues of our Southland thai is last vanishing. It was pointed out that a large number of the delegates were boarded at the ho tels or boarding houses instead of being entertained in the homes of the generous people of the city. To some extent what these gentlemen said was well founded, but there are good reasons why the hospitality of our people is not as conspicuous as in the old times. Today traveling and hotel facilities are far superior thau in olden times when for shelter many a traveler was necessarily de pondenl upon the generosity of some pioneer settler. Then. too. the mul tiplicity in these days of conventions! and other gatherings of different kinds make it impossible for private families to keep open house for ev ery one. BUI apart from this is if j not possible that too orten when ! hospitality is displayed it becomes a | burden to iKith bos; and giiesl be cause the host or hostess makes t.io elaborate preparation in the matter of food and in other ways.' The! grace of hospitality woulds be just I as effectively shown by simpler ar-j rangemeuis and it would mean great- ! er ease, comfort and pleasure for Where Wiil It Kiicl'.' How the stories of great men and" women that were cherished in our youth are being discarded by mod ern day iconoclasts. Washington and the cherry tree. Last of all it is said that the celebrated French potter and ar tist. Palissy, the story of whose hard ships, persistence and ultimate suc cess has been an inspiration to many, was an impostor of the worst kind. If this sort of thing goes on it will next be said 'that Washington never commanded the Continental army nor crossed the Delaware, and that Napoleon had been dead ten years when Waterloo was fought.
