Regarded as a contrivance for dis saminating the germs of l'arul disease: r.iie fly is one of nature's mastei oieces. A fairly large bacterium is a-" much smaller than a fly than a fly i;: smaller than an elephant. The mi crobes of many of our ordinary con tagious disorders are a thousand times more minute than this. The insect, moreover, is equipped witl spines, hairs, folds, cavities and pro jections innumerable for microbes to cling to. In addition, each of its si> little feet has the sticky pad which wt used to call a sucker, adhesive eoougl to hold the fly on a window pane, am therefore just the thing for picking up germs by the hundred. One may well credit reports of a single fly, filth; from a swill barrel and loaded witl 582,000 bacteria of one species alont Moreover, the fly, living on infectei food, takes the microbes into its ow; digestive tract, carries thero about-ft days, and deposits tnem by thousand in the "fly-specks." There, for ex ample, bacillus tuberculosis may life for two weeks. It would be bad enough if the fly merely crawled about in the sputum oi a tuberculosis patient or the dejecta of a case of typhoid, and then simply infected the food on the way to their mouths. It does worse tuan this; It starts a culture of the deidly germs in the food which we eat tbmorow, and by the time tomorrow arrives tbe sin gle microbe has become a thousand. "Here is a sample of a class of facts which may well give pater familias pause. At one of the Connecticut Ag ricultural Experiment Stations, by waj of finding out how many bacteria a fly can transfer to a milk jar, they tried shaking up flies in sterilized water and estimating the numbers washed off. The record number was 116,800,000 from IS individuals, or more than G. 500,000 apiece. Almost qvernight, we are beginning to realize where the fly is born and bred, and where his travels take him, and what is it .ie ^-nshes off into the milk. Certain facts are coming to light that are calculated to make the house holder sit up and take notice. Breast fed babies, for instance, are exposed to dangers through air and water, but not through their food, and they die, at the worst, a third faster during fly time. "Bottle" babies die three and four times faster. But, after all, one does not need sta tistics to make them suspicious of the fly, for even such painstaking studies as that of Daniel D.| Jackson, of New York city, who by means of fly-traps placed in various places, showed a re markably close coincidence between the prevalence of flies and the onset fatal cases of typhoid fever. The con vincing evidence is that flies have been caught with the goods. It is an old device, almost as old as the science of bacteriology, to let a fly crawl about on a sterilized plate of j nutritive gelatin such as is commonly; employed for growing cultures of bac teria. At first, there Is no sign; but,! after a few h<?urs in tne incubator- the insect's track-' on the gelatin is out lined in flourishing colonies of mi crobes. Virtually every time the fly has put down one of his six feet, he has planted at least one germ. A march of one inch results in a hundred vigorous cultures. It Is a pretty clean fly that does not bear 1,000 germs. A fairly dirty one will carry 50,000. A fly just back from the swill-pail or pig-pen, at the height of the season for flies and germs, car ries a load approaching the record number in a drop of city milk?and this is well into the millions.?Mc Clure's Magazine. Prussia's People's Forests. There are 20,000)000 acres of pine garden forest standing in Prussia to day. Half of it belongs to the people In common, either to the state or to the villages. It paid 40 years ago an average profit of 80 cents an acre per year. Today it pays $1.65 an /ere. In 20 years, when it is more mature, it will pay $3.00 an acre, net profit, and, in addition to its protective value, will return, from the common forest alone, an income of $30,000,000 a year to the people.
