As They Were Speeding Home From A Day's Outing at a Resort at a Lake. Five persons were killed Sunday when an automobile in which they were riding was struck by a fast passenger train of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railroad, west of Vigues Station, St. Louis county, Mo. All were residents of St. Luois. The dead: Theodore F. Witte. Theodore F. Witte, Jr., aged 3 years. Mrs. Carl Klinge. Miss Halcycon Campbell. Frederick O. Witte. The two men were brothers and officials of the Witte Hardware Company. Mrs. Kilnge was their sister-in-law. The party had been at Creve Coeur Lake, a resort twelve miles west of St. Louis and were speeding homeward when killed. Theodore Witte was driv ing the machine, with his brother beside him. Mr. Witte and his brother were tossed forty feet away. The boy's body dropped from the front of the train an eighth of a miles down the track, and the women caught in the tonneau, were crushed almost be-' yond recognition. Theodore Witte was not instantly killed. He sur-. vived long enough to be carried to > a hospital. HOLLEY'S COMET COMING. Will Be First Visible Here During I September. Next month is scheduled the visit of Halley's comet, which visits this earth once each 74 years or 79 years. Local astronomers or those who believe in the influence of these starry visitors on earthly affairs will b6 interested to know that this his toric comet is about due. It has been about 75 years since this comet, named for its discoverer, Halley, the English astronomer, and the most important of all the com ets, has shown itself to terrestrial eyes. Additional importance is at tached to the comet, because it is the one whfch ftyjt gave -^occasion to Halley and his successors to dis cover the laws which these voyagers in space obey and to determine their orbits. Eleven former appearances of the comet have been observed with ac curacy, dating from the year 106G, the year of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, at which time it had a great effect on the people and the army. With less certainty one may go back to the year 12, before our era, and assign to this celebrated comet 25 appear ances which have taken place in nearly nineteen centuries, but the older observations are not entirely definite. The reason why the visits of the comet vary from 74 to 79 years is said to be on account of the Influ ence exerted upon it by the planets Jupiter and Saturn, which some times hasten and sometimes delay it. It was last seen In 1835. It will again come into sight some time in September of the present year, when it will appear as a round nebulous object, its tail being stretched out in a direction opposite to the earth with the main part of the comet between the two. The best time to observe the comet wll he in September, because at that time, on account of the move ment of the earth around the sun, the comet will appear stationary. The comet will be in colse proximity, comparatively, from the latter half of the present year throughout the greater part of 1910. Prior to the time when it appears stationary In September and after that time as long as it is In resonable distance, the comet will be most easily locat ed by photography. WOMAN MOONSHINER IN JAIL. She Is Accused of Making Moonshine in Liberty County, Ga. The first woman moonshiner ever copped by the local Federal authori ties, says a dispatch from Savannah, was brought in a few nights ago from Hinesville, in Liberty county, Ga. The feminine distiller of am brosial neetar jis Margaret Van Blount, alias Margaro Williams, colored, and she is now resting be hind the bars of the county jail at Savannah. The charge against the woman Is that of illicit distilling and selling of whiskey. As evidence of her guilt four gallons of whiskey and the still used were secured by the officers and are held as evidence. The still, though not a large one, Is complete in every detail. It was found in the house of the old ne gress, whose age is given as 55 years. Despite her advanced years, Mar garet gave the Liberty county deputy sheriff a run for his money before he was able to overtake her. When the negress caught sight of the of ficer she lit out afoot, as if she wore a Marathon runner. After a hot chase she was taken in hand. She was taken to the Hinesville jail for safe keeping until the Federal au thorities carried her to Savannah. The place where the still was tak en is near RIceboro. It is thought that there is some man connected with the running of the still, but Margaret refuses to talk about this side of the question and claims that she alone was Interested in the still.
