THE MIGHTY LEVER THE SPARTANBURG HERALD'S EDITORIAL REPLY TO His Long Winded Letter Published ? in The Times and Democrat Some Time Ago. The article reproduced below was published in the editorial columns of the Spartanburg Herald some time ago under the caption of "The Mighty Lever." Having published Mr. Lever's long winded article, in justice to the Herald we publish its editorial reply to the same. The Herald says: "After reading Congressman Lev er's reply to Hon. Thomas H. Dan iel, The Herald's Washington corre spondent, we are firmly convinced, to quote Hon. P. H. Fike, the sport ing editor of this journal, that Mr. Lever is a 'big man.' "The volume of documentary evi dence he produces to show the great distance between the truth and what Mr. Daniel had written this paper, about the removal of that basic slag and potash salts from the dutiable list aot only confers upon our Wash ington correspondent membership in the Lever Ananias-Club, by unani mous consent of the ways ai^d means committee of the house of represen tatives, but, reveals the fact that "Uncle Joe" Cannon is a second rater when it comes to taking the kinks out of that distinguished collection of celebrites, who by common report are believed to be in a measure in fluenced by the wirhes of the speaker as handed down by one Sereno Payne. "The letters to .Mr. Lever, writ ten by the distinguished members of the ways and means committee, reveal an influence over that body wielded by the representative from South Carolina, which is awe-inspir ing to contemplate. Few of his constituents will be able to appreci ate the vast' power Mr. Lever has developed. It is shown that he had but to speak, in a whisper as it were, to the controlling members of the ways and means committee, to have them about face and reverse them selves on this proposition. "It must not be believed that the ease with which Mr. Lever accom plished this feat is due to the fact that the ways and means committee put a duty on basic slag and potash salts through an oversight, as was alleged by The Herald's Washington correspondent. Not at all. That Is not it. It was doubtless due to force ?of the man and a thorough apprecia tion on the part of the ways and .means committee that they could not afford to antagonize Mr. Lever, I "Neither is it to be believed that' those standpat Republican on that, committee were acquiescing through and feeling that they owed Mr. Lever anything for voting with them for a duty on lumber. None of these things entered into the matter. Mr. Lever just reached up and took pot ash salts basic slag, etc., out of the dutiable column and placed it on the free list. That's all."
