CAMPAIGN OPENS. FIRST MEETING HELD IX BRAXCHVTLJJ2. Candidates for tl?e Senate and-House of Eepresentat:ei\? Speak to the Voters of That Placed The Branchvillt- correspondent of the State has the following in tie State of the campaign meeting held in that place on Tuesday: The county campaign for the big lere yesterday for a heated summer season. About 250. of the unter rifl ed were present and gave close at tention to the three dozen candidates that were making promises. There ibeing cnly one genuine, Simon pure prohibition candidate for the legislature will make the race an interesting study to he cold water advocates, and there are not a few of them in the county. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. E. H. Beckham of the Methodist church. Hon. A. S. Dukes presided and in troduced Hon. Robert Lide, candi date for the State senate. Mr. Lide has no opposition, but made a good speech. He might be a conditional prohibitionist. He promised .to keep the county dispensary out of politics pnd if dispensers ,or employes of the dispensary persisted in dabbling in politics to have them removed even if the whole county board had to be removed. It is said that cer tain dispensary politicians on hand did not like the speech of Mr. Lide, tout as he has no opposition there is no relief except to take their medi cine. Heretofore the dispensary peo ple have figured very conspicuously during election years. In the legislative hurdle" race there are 11 entries for the four places, but only 10 started at the pole. B. J. Hoover, well known by all patrons ? of the old South Carolina railroad and a declared candidate for the legislature, bucked at the start and declared foul. He was led from the Ting a '?quitter" at the first call for volunteers to "save the State." ' lights" was John S. Bovman, Esq , lights" was john S. Bowman. Esq., a young attorney of the Orangeburg bar. Mr. Bowman has a number of friends here and was well received. He ran for the house two years ago and received 1,4 S 9 votes, being de feated by a small number. Mr. Bow man favors the county dispensary system. He promised to stand to Senator Lide and keep the dispensary out of politics if elected. No. 2 in the quarter heat was J. D. Griffith. Mr. Griffith heartily favored the present liquor law. . No. 3 in the person of Mr. W. Cleu Griffith came up to the mark at once and sailed into Clemson coll ge. He thanked God that for five mouths he' had been a prohibitionist, but if elected he would let everybody dviuk tha-. wanted to. Ncr. 4 as entered was Mr. J. Cal vin Haydea of the Fork section. He also went for Clemson college with p'oves off and declared in favor of the present whiskey laws. No. 5 was next in order and the bookmaker read the name out as T. P. llorger of Jamison. The speech of Mr. Horger was really the surprise of. the day, as it easily ranked "among the best." Mr. Horger's views on the^ whiskey question are closely akm to prohibition, and it was freely admitted here today that if he would make his platform a lit tle more definite he might get into the "winner class." ? No. 6 was posted from the judge's box as Andrew Jackson Hydrick. Jr. Mr. Hydrick is the only ofd member of the house offering for re-ciection. He is a v?sr> poi.alai member of the Orangeburg bar and is well known throughout the coun ty. ? He favors the present whiskey laws, but would assist in keeping the dispensary out of the politics of the county. Mr. Hydrick made a strong speech and was well receiv ed. Na. 7 was labeled the cold water cand;.da;e and answered to the name Of Miles O'Riley. Mr. O'Riley is a consistent Christian prohibitionist and iias devoted several jears of his life in an effort to awakeu the peo ple on the subject of drink. He made a strong appeal to the people and it has been freely predicted that his name will be among the winners. No. S on the lists was Col Basconi A. Shuler of Elloree. Col. Shuler has been elected mayor of that pros perous Orangeburg county town tor 12 consecutive term*. He is known as a good man and is solidly backed by his borne people. He favors the Carey-Cotliran law with some modi fied restrictions. No. 9 was entered under the aus pices of the Springfield progressive Democracy and came up to the scratch under the name oi' John B. Stroman. Mr. Stromau is a large and successful farmer of the Spring field section. He favored liberal education, good roads, increased ap propriation for Confederate soldiers, abolition of the lien law and the present whiskey laws. -Mr. Stroman made one of the bbest speeches of lhe daj and was well received. No. 10 as entered was Mr. W. M. Warren, a successful merchant, builder and contractor of ibis town. He is known as a "solid man" and made a good speech. His strongest card was his views on the vagrancy laws. He favored a law by which the loafing negroes of the towns could be run out into tin- cotton patches and made to work. Since the severance of Calhoun county Orangeburg will only bbe en titled to four representatives, sonse quently six of the hannsome candi dates here today will be left at home. They are all good men, but have dif ferent views. The race for sheriff promises to be close and exciting. Sheriff John H. Dukes is opposed by ex-Sheriff A. M. Salley. They are both good men and have many fneuds. Mr. Salley ARRESTED FOR DYNAMITING. Secretary Rice, of the Auduborn So ciety, Swears Out Warrants. . Mr. James Henry Rice, Secretary of the Auduborn Society of this State, swore out before Magistrate Bran son in Orangeburg Thursday morn ing a warrant for the arrest of Dr. L. H. A Good Suggestion. The Johnson News-Mohitor says: "Now that the watermelon season is jon the garbage cart should go around offener than it does. Watermelon rinds that lie on the streets and in back yards for a week or ten days (are dangerous to the health of the j citizens." This is a good suggestion juad ihe health authorities should act (on it. The Ladies Minstrel. The date set for the Ladies Min strel is Thursday evening, July 3 0th. Weir Mitchell tells with keen enjoyment of the experience of a med ical friend of his who engaged a nurse, recently graduated, for a case of de lirium tremens. The physician suc ceeded in quieting his patient and left some medicine, instructing the nurse to administer it to him if he "began to see snakes again." At the next call the physician found the patient again rav ing. To his puzzled inquiry the nurse replied that the man had been going on that way for several hours and that she had not given him any medicine. "But didn't I tell you to give it to' him if lie began to see snakes again?' demanded the physician. "But he didn't see snakes this time," replied the nurse confidently. "He saw red. white and blue turkeys with straw hats on."?Lipplncott's. The Laughter of Childhood. The laugh of a child will make the holiest day more sacred still. Strike with hand of fire, O weird musician, thy harp strung with Apollo's golden , hair; (ill the vast cathedral aisles with symphonies sweet and dim, deft touch er of the organ keys; blow, bugler, blow until thy silver notes do touch and kiss the moonlit waves and charm the lovers wandering mid vine clad hills. But know your sweetest strains are discords all compared with child hood's happy laugh?the laugh that fills the eyes with light and every r heart with joy. 0 rippling river of laughter, thou art the blessed boundary. Hue between the beasts and men, and every wayward wave of thine doth drown some fretful lieud of care. O Laughter, rose lipped daughter of Joy, there are dimples enough in thy cheeks to catch and hold and glorify all the fears of grief.?Robert G. In ge rsoll. With an Eye to Business.
