for enlistment in the United
States Guards for protection of
public utilities in the* United
States. The enlistment wil^be
for the period of existing emer
gency. Men enlisted must be
beyond the draft age; that is,
over thirty years of age. The
enlistment of married men is
authorized. Men with former
service in the Spanish Ameri
can War, Philippino and China
Hoxer Campaign; men with
former service in the Army,
Navy and Marine Corps, and
men with experience in well
organized fire and police departments
are especially desired.
Where practicable, men enlisted
for the United States
Guards will serve in the vicinity
of their homes.
Liberal allowances will be
made bv the government for the
support of families of men en*
listing for the United States
Guards on the same basis as
other enlisted men of the Army,
under the system of compulsory
and family allowances.
It is requested that the widest
publicity be given this matter in
order that men beyond the draft
age, and men bevond the ase of
enlistment in the Regular Army
National Guard and National
Armv be given an opportunity
to serve their country.
Men desiring enlistment in the
United States Guards should be
referred to any ot the following

Notice jot Election.
Notice is hereby given that
the annual election of officers
for the Town of Pageland will
be held on Tuesday, January 22,
1918. An intendant and four
wardens are to be elected for
the ensuing year. Rules governing
the general election will I
apply. All qualified voters |
living within the Town limits!
will be entitled to vote, provided
however, that each of said
i voters has registration certificate
covering this particular election.
I The registration books are now
open at the store of C. L. Gul
ledge, and will remain open
j until five davs before the
election. Any person failing to
register will forfeit his right to

during which time taxes cannot
be paid Books will open again
Monday, January 7th, at which
time the first penalty of 1 per
cen . will be added.

Germany has been placed under
the trusteeship of the Germ; n
government. There is no in
tention, however, to confiscate
property or to infringe on the
personal rights of the property
holders.
Auditor's Notice.
The Auditor's office will be
opened for the assessment of all
tsxable Real Estate and Personal
property, from January 1st,
1918 to February 20th, 19l8.
All male citizens between the
ages of 21 and 60 yeafs are
deemed Taxable Polls, except
those who are maimed or ior
other causes are incapable of
earning a support.
The law requires 50 per. cent,
peualty. added to taxes on property
subject to taxes and no re
turned for assessment on or
before the 20tn of February.
