C.. under Postal Act * of March 3, 1879. Ecambtr 5, i?17 i WHAT AUOI T THE MAI1. ROUTES? J Postmaster Quick lias been ; instructed to have Carrier J. T t Little continue the service 011 : Route 2 as heretofore, instead of 1 reversing and changing the ( schedule as ordered several da\ s ago. Protests were sent to the department and to Congressman ] Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson went 1 right into the matter and soon 1 instructions were forthcoming J that the order to change had 1 been xescinded. Nothing was t to be gained by the change, and 1 the service would have been 1 poorer than before. We believe 1 a majority of the patrons will he t glad to know that the service is ( to continue as before. I There is some ground for the belief that the sweeping changes 1 in the rural routes of Union ( county will not remain in effect 1 very long. It is said that the c inspector who recommended c these changes went out on but one of the roads from Monroe, i but made his map from the soil \ survey map of Union county, i It is state.I further that the > changes benefit very few patrons, but withdraw the service ( from a great many. As an evi 1 dence that the soil survey map is is inaccurate in many instances! and that the rural routes could ( not be rearranged for the better' 1 by one stranger sitting in luej office anil marking out cours ?s!< and distances it might hi' cited i ' that the road running south > f through Lanes Creek township'< by Ed Collins' and the old tan yatd is called the Cheraw road on i this map. Nov. 0.?Cover crops when plowed nder in the spring, makes live oils and it is always live soils lint give the best crops, no matter what is planted on them. A live soil is a fertile soil. It reathes, eats, drinks and teems, vith bacterial life. By chemic 1 reaction and physical forces, nstrvc ions. Perhaps numerous instances night be cited to show that the 31 ervice now is poorer than be u ore the changes went into S( 'ffoct December 1st. Note the tl act that Carrier Tom Cox goes p >y S. E. Belk's and on to Ed Jollins and then retraces to ^ kdU's mill, and Carrier Penager v 101 s right by Collins' also. a The prediction of the Journal f( s that the service will soon be f( eestablished about as before, r light changes being made here v ind there, but the routes as es c ablished by inspectors who { ictually went over the ground c emaining intact in the main. 1 S whild Dies Near Mt Croghan j From Burns. ], Mt. Meet m fertility nnd humus of the soil is exhausted The granulation, and thus the pore space, is de stroved. The soil is left an iu ert mass unable to support life. Much humus is lost by washing, as it is the lightest and finest part of the soil and is the first to be carried away where the surface drainage is poor. When exposed to air, humus also de teriorates in value. Therefore it is most important that the supply of humus in the soil be maintained and increased. Don't forget that planting cover crops is the best wav to keep up this all important part of the soil.
