A dwelling was on fire in Marshville a few months ago and a young man was carrying household and kitchen furniture from the burning building that was almost ready to collapse when the phone rang. He ' couldn't resist the temptation to stop long enough to answer what he knew to be the last call ever to be received over the telephone in that house. It so happened that a young ladv from another town was at the other end of the line and after breaking gently a few remarks she engaged herself in telling a storv that promised to be rather long drawn out for tne young man to take in under the prevailing circumstances, but he stayed on the job.heroically un til the flames began to scorch his clothing and then he broke into the middle of a sentence with the following exclamation: "Talk in a hurry; it's hot as h?1 in here!" To a native of a certain sec tion of the Southwest that is well known for its malarial tendencies a St. Louis traveling man said: "I notice that there is a great deal of ague hereabout." "Yes," was the laconic response. "That's a great drawback. It unfits a man entirely for work, doesn't it?" "Generally it does," said the other.
