Mr. Virgil Griffin lost a good I horse Thursday from injuries sustained in a boer a few days before. Messrs. H. M. and \V. R. Simpson of Hamlet came over Sunday to visit their mother, Mrs. A. M. Simpson. The former re mained until Tuesday morning;. Mr. Harry H. Harrell, of Rubv, who has been employed by the C. & L. railroad for some time has been appointed carrier on rural route No. 4 from Chesterfield. He began his work Monday. The appoint ment for route No. 3 was not made. The bridge over Bear creek at Teal's mill gave way a few days ago just after an automobile had passsed over. Messr. J. C. Baker and W. P. Swinnie of Chesterfield and a Miss Mvatt were in the car. Thus they narrowly escaped a serious accident. *The /Sates at the big dam at Badin, N. This pond will reach seven mile? or more up the river and will be about three miles wide. The dam is two hundred and ten feet high from the river bed and is the same thickness at the base. It is arched up the river and is built of reinforced concrete. The timber has been re moved from the territory to be covered by the water, and a fine lake will thus be made. A 40passenger boat has been placed on the lake. When the water was shut off the river bed became almost dry, and the people along the river had a great time nsning. 1 be guards at the railroad bridge near Whitney caught nearly thirty dollars worth of fish when the dam at that place was closed. Mayor J. E. Agerton has appointed the following named gentlemen as members of the Board of Health: Dr. B. C. Moore, A. H. Mangum, J. R. Cato, A. F. Funderburk, I. C. Parker. These men are ap pointed to serve terms varying from ^oe year to five years in the order named above. This board has organized by elect ing J. R. Cato, president; J. C. Parker, secretary; and the town policeman as health ofticer. This board has been appointed and organized according to the State law, and is therefore vested with almost unlimited powers to deal with matters pertaining to the public health. This new board is composed of men who, there is good reason to believe, will look carefully into all con ditions calculated to endanger the health of the people of the town. This board has full au thority to inspect or have in speciea any premises in the town to ascertain the cpnditions existing there with reference to ! the public welfare It also has . power to investigate an quarantine against any infections or contagious disease. The members of the hoard are anxious to 1 have the people report any mat i ters that should have attention. 1 If any one desires to look into I the matter to know just what powers and duties this board has ' he may read article 1 and 2 of I chapter 23 Civil Code 1012, and i especially Sections 1591 to 1595 ] of Article 1. Mr. Vernon Helms, the younj man from Wingate who tried k take his life last fall by cutting his throat, died in Morgantoi last Wednesday afternoon, am was buried at Faulks churct Thursday. He was mentally un balanced at the time of the deed and remained so until his death He was horn and reared al the Helms homestead in Lane: Creek township. His condition has been a very critical, and his recovery has been considered very doubt y ful. The doctors don't think there is much chance of his recovery. Applicants must not be less than sixteen years of age. When Scholarships are vacant after July 6 they will be awarded to those making the highest aver age at this examination, provided they meet the conditions governing the award, Applicants for Scholarships should write to President Johnson for Scholarship examination blanks. These blanks properly filled out by the applicant, should be with President Johnson by July 1st. Scholarships are worth $100 and free tuition. The next session will open September 19, 1917.
