Cans can not be had now except through government agencies.' and this is die opportunity for this county to get a supply for the summer. Cans can not be had in quantities less than car loads, and E. W. Duvall has agreed to handle half the car at Cheraw and Chesterfield if the people in the other sections will take the other half. Mail addressed to him . should bear the name of his ship and be directed in care of postmaster at New York. < Messrs. D. J. Everett and G. r W Ganti of Wadesboro have invented a device to protect ships from submarine attact. They j recently carried a model ^ and drawing to Washington and explained it to the proper authoiities. It was pronounced the best thing in its line the authorities had seen. The in 1 vention is a double net device J which is fastened to the ship to 1 be protected. There will be t twn rnwc r?f not on onnVi ^t TT V V?f u v/l 11VI VU uavil OlUC *11 ; ship. The rows will be several , feet apart and the nearest one will be several feet from the side of the ship. The ship will be protected for its full length on each side, and the net will ' 1 extend down the depth of the 1 ship. It is believed that it would be impossible for a ship properly equipped with this de vice to be torpedoed. Mr. ] Everett estimates that a ship equipped with this device will be compelled to reduce its cargo only one-fourth of 1 per cent to make its ordinary speed. Every one who has seen a model of this invention, or has heard it ] demonstrated, has faith that it i will be most effective in com bating submarines.
