Tucker, Editor t t Subscription Price - - $1.00 1 Entered as second-class mail c matter at the post otfice at Page- . land, S. C., under Postal Act of March 3, 1879. June 21, 1916 < j The man who complains first, I loudest and longest of the dry ] weather is the first man to set up a howl when it begins to rain. ( PLENTY OF PEAS < Peas have scld at a price t ranging from ninety cents to a dollar and ten cents a bushel for months- Everybody had peas j to sell. Quite a number of farm- t ers fed peas to their stock. Be- { cause of the bumper crop lest , year we fear that a much smaller acreage is being seeded to peas this year, while just the opposite should have been true. Be- ' cause peas are cheap is another ' big reason why every available * ~..1J I atiu auuiuu uc ^rauicu ui ouwcu in peas. Then every acre ot corn should have peas either in rows or broadcast. 1 Two extra large crops seldom 1 come in succession, and the 1 farmer who grows peas this year j may expect more than ninety < cents a bushel for them. 1 BLACKBERRY PIE Editor Ashcraft's annual article on the more or less famous blackberry pie is shorter this time than usual, but it shows his < fondness for the stuff all right. { It was published in the last issue 1 of the Monroe Enquirer, of I which he is editor. Here it is: ( If we had to give in the black berry crop for taxes and that same crop was listed,at even i would "bust" the taxpayers. , The blackberry crop is worth , 'steen million dollars. The man j who along about this time of ] year puts his feet under a table on which there is fresh black berry pie and cold sweet milk has about all that is coming to ! him in the way of good eats. , Blackberry pie time. Glory be. j + ^ 1 NK. SELLERS NOT IN THE RACE The last issue of the Chesterfield Advertiser carried the fol- 1 lowing paragraph: "Mr. Samuel J. Sellers is not in the race for Congress. We ( are authorized by Mr. Sellers ( himself to make this statement. He also says that he has never authorized anyone to say that he . was in the race, that he has had no intention to oppose Mr. Stev- ( enson." ( There must be a mistake about the last clause of this statement. Several weeks ago we noticed (he statement in the Cheraw Chronicle that Mr. Sellers was considering the matter of enter- I ing the race for congress. Be 1 lore taking the liberty to make r this statement to the public we c telephoned Mr. Sellers in regard f to the matter. Mr. ore coiH I I he had not fullv made up his s mind at that time, but that we e were at liberty to say what the Chronicle had said, t his we did, though not in evactly the c same words. A few days later s we saw Mr. Sellers on the streets c of Pageland and asked him again. His reply was about the same as before. He stated that b he was then out "feeling the c pulse" of the people and it was J] qune probable that he would run. 1 So far as we know no one has said positively that he was "in the race," but we can hardly see how the statement, "that he has horl nr\ : ...... .I./ uiidiuuu 10 oppose Mr ^ Stevenson," and the facts as j( stated above are to be brought c into harmony, > ANNOUNCEMENTS | Announcements of candidates for ofice will be inserted under this head at he following rates, cash in advance: ownship offices $2.00; County and state [3.00; Congress $5.00.
