) The Pageland Journal | Published Wednesday Mornings I by The Journal Company __, C. M. Tucker, Editor , ??????????? i Subscription Price - - $1.00 i Entered as second class mail matter at the post olfice at Page- , land, S. C., under Postal Act of March 3, 1879. June 14, 1916 Once upon a time there was a sandhill farmer who didn't plow out into every road on his place and use it for a ditch and trash pile. He has been dead a good many vears. . The northwest breezes Saturday and Sunday were not caused by the warm air eruptions at the Republican and Progressive National conventions in Chicago, as you might have supposed. Editor Beasley, of the Monroe Journal, asks for proof that Shaw Meehan killed a 21 3-4 pound carp near Chesterfield. Ask Mr. Will Porter or most any other citizen of Chesterfield. But vou better express your doubts when you are a safe distance from the above named town. ii. :, ? I.? (U- t 11 in i n_uinj, aaiu iu uc iiiu iasiest trotting ostrich in the world, has been secured as a Fourth of July attraction at MoDroe. The ostrich will be driven by a man sitting on a small rubber-tired vehicle. The bird will trot in a contest with any mule or horse in the county. The race will be free to all. ? ^ ^ - - The resignation of Justice Hughes from the Supreme Court bench leaves a vacancy to be filled by another appointee of President Wilson. Maybe he can pick a man whose confir mation by the senate will not cause so long a delay as in the ?- - casevf Brcmcfeis. ? Solicitor Spears and the other court officials wisely decided there should be no June court in Chesterfield county this year. This session of court always conies in a very busy time, and usually very little is done. The farmers have more important business to attend to and the June court has been expensive but not profitable. The letter from Mr. Bagwell, general manager of the Sea board, which is published elsewhere in this issue bears out our contention that the management of the ChpRtrrfielrt Rr I 'lnrnctur I ..v* v. iJUIIVIlOIVl railway is trying to give the people the very best service possi ble under the circumstances. Mr. Bagwell's letter shows clearly that the road is willing to acconmodate the people, even at a loss, when occasion demands. We are still of the opinion that ihe road should be released from ibis agreement. Then if the management sees fit, the train could be run just the same. Theodore Roosevelt met defeat again last week. He had planned to force himself upon the Republicans by having the Progressive convention at the same time and place as the Republican convention. Both con ventions were held all right, but the Republicans refused to take Teddy. The Progressives nominated him, of course, but no one knows better than thecolonol how impossible it would be lor him to become president as I the nominee of the waning party 1 he originated. Democrats can J now look with complacency upon the situation. If the colonel accepts the nomination he helps to elect Wilson. If he refuses he helps but little to elect Hughes. Many Progressives , will vote for Wilson rattier than j the standput and erstwhile silent < Hughes.
