Fight
Monrce, May 25?Mr. I. D.
McCrae, present recorder, and
who is a candidate for re election
and Esq. M. L. Flow, a candidate
for the same otfice, came
to blows today in the office of
the latter.
Political accusations were at
root of the disturbance it is said.
They were separated before any
physical damage resulted.
The case will be called before
W. O. Lemmond, sub recorder,
at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning,
Mr. Lemmond is also a candidate
for recorder at the coming
primary.
The contest for this office is
getting exciting, and over-zealous
statements by Squire Flow
was charged by Mr. McCrae,
and these were denied by Squire
Flow. The lie was passed, it is
said, and the fight was on.
Auto For Policemen
Monroe, May 25.?The board
of aldermen has purchased an
automobile for the policemen to
use in answering calls to suburbs
of the city. Previous to this
time, the policemen have either
walked or used surries. The
alderman, however, have had
this move in mind for some
time to meet the necessity, and

The city has a splendid force
of officers, and with this added
facility, will meet every demand
made upon them.
An Irishman called at.the doctor's
one night about ten o'clock
with the information that his
two-months cjd baby would not
sleep. The physician gave the
man some sleeping powders for
the baby, telling him to let him
know the following day how
they acted.
The next morning the Irishman
appeared, his face wreathed
in smiles.
"Well, how did the powders
work my man?"asked the doctor.
"Thim powders, doc," replied
the man,44wuz a wonder! They
shure did th' thrick, all right."
"Made the baby sleep, did
they?"
"No, doc, they didn't," said the
Irishman. "We give th' darlint
a dose, jest as you tol' me, but it
wouldn't shleep at all, at all. So
me an' me wife jest took a big
dose o* thim powders oursils, we
did, an' wint right off to shleep,
an' niver beard th* darlint cry
one bit any more."
Patrick O'Mally, wearing a
long face, came into the colonel's
tent and requested a leave of ah
sence.
"Didn't I give you your furlough
only two months ago?"
asked the colonel.
Pat wiped a tear from his eye.
"Yis, colonel, but this morning I
received a letter from home sayin'
me wife's down with fever
an' longin' for the sight o* me
'fore she goes."
"See here O'Mally," blazed the
colonel, "I've got it on you this
time! I got a letter from your
wife vesterday, saying you didn't
draw a sober breath during your
last furlough, and asking me not
to give you any more. So I
guess that ends it."
Crestfallen, Pat turned to go.
Just before he reached the door
he hesitated; then turned.
"Colonel."
"Yes."
"May I say a word?"
"Go ahead."
"Well, colonel, I just want to
say there are two mighty big
liars in this tent. I haven't got
any wife."
Two negroes stood at the back
part of a hall where Senator
Penrose was making a speech.
The colored men listened for
a few minutes and then one of
them said: "Who am dat man,
Sambo?"
"Ah doan know what's his
name," replied Sambo, "but he
certainly do recommend hisself
raos' highly, doan he?"
