Next year they will know to give it distance. England claims to have a death-dealing machine of some kind that is so terrible that she has never used it on anv of her enemies. We are from Missouri. ? That man Bonsai who builds railroads would confer a favor on several people hereabouts if he would build that line from upon a close friend or relative who has been ruined bv slron g drink let him vote against prohibition in the September election. All who can find such a person should vote down the poison which wrecks homes and scatters woe and misery broadcast - throughout the land. It wrecks men's bodies and damns men's souls. It is the devil's strong arm. Which way will you vote? ? * m + m Three years ago Pageland had a ball team that beat nearly every team in this section. This year we have a team that has been beaten by every team with y which they have crossed bats. The last game lost was to Wingate last Friday, the score standing 4 to 3. bix games have been played, and nearly every one was lost by iust a score or two. Luck seems to be against the boys. The second nine beat Red Rose Friday afternooa by 2 scores. This was the only match played on the local diamond this season. This must be the reason we loose. A dog barks louder in his own yard than elsewhere. ^ T. B. Laney, one of Monroe's policemen, is about to learn that he is a poet. He has written several poems recently that would do credit to one with a reputation for producing the rhymed stuff. He is not very well educated, they tell us,4 and he writes by a kind of inspiration Tha : * i nb luspnaiion is just as apt to come when he is on duty as an officer of the law as at any other time. America still protests against Germany's submarine policy which murders women and children and other noncombitants, and Germany thinks we are leaning toward the Allies and away from her. Germany fails to understand our position and we fail to understhand hers. There is still hope that conflict between the two conntries may be avoided. ^ .If there is a matuin the coun ??? ? Earnhart and Mr. Wriston Shepherd captured a still early last night in the extreme north eastern part of the county in New Salem township. When found the still was warm, and other evidences tended to show that it had been in operaiton during the day. No arrests were made, as it is possible that the moonshiners may have been warned, or having done a days work, quit for the night. The still was brought to town and is now sitting out on the court house square. It holds about 75 or 80 gallons. Had Not Heard of War. There's a man in Humboldt county who did not hear about the European war until this summer. To C. E. Gill, a local real estate man, falls the distinction of finding this man, who is Angus Clafson, a homesteader of South Humboldt county. On a recent trip into the mountains Gill encountered Clafson, who had just come out of his lonely camp, where he had received no newspapers for many months. Bobby and Elsie were told that there were \wo apples on 4ne Taore ror them, lieing" taught to consider each other first, Bobby said: "Take your choice, Elsie." "No," said Elsie, "you take vour choice." Each kept insisting that the other take first choice, but finally Elsie broke the deadlock by taking the biggest apple. Instantly Bobby's eyes flashed and he exclaimed wrathfulfy: "Put that back and take your choice!" CHURCH NOTES BAPTIST, J. M.Sullivan. Pastor. Come to the meeting at White Plains this week. You would enjoy hearing Bro. lones. Our services will very likely be two J! sci v ivcs vviui uinner on tne ground. We enjoyed our stay with Bro. Jones and the good people of Ridgeland. We are glad the Lord gave us a splendid meeting. A partial result was eight for baptism and some few more to join at the water. We were afraid for a long time to go down in this low region near the coast but we never felt better in our lives than during our stay down there. Next Sunday we will begin our meeting at Liberty Hill. Bro. Jones will assist us in this meeting. Brethren pray for us in all these services, not for any honor that we may receive but that the name of our Christ may be honored and glorified. METHODIST EPISCOPAL J. A. McGraw. Our meeting at Zion will begin next Sunday with two ser.mons by Bro. H. T. Morrison, of Darlington. Bro. Morrison may fill our appointment for us at Pageland on Sunday night. Also, we will fill our appoint raent at rLoar next Sunday at 11 o'clock and will preach at Prices school house at 4 o'clock, and will be at Pageland for the evening service. * ' John F. Wiggins, an industrious farmer ot this vicinity, last fall killed a fine porker and tflte women folks took the head and cooked it, making it into souse and livermush. After scraping and cleaning the jowl, this particular piece of anatomy was carefully tucked away on the kitchen wall to use in case of mumps. The family escaped this troublesome experience, however, and one day last week the jowl attracted the attention (f Mr. Wiggins, who took it dov\H and examined it. He found thr t an entirely new set of teeth baa grown out just below the old ones.?Ex. i Certainly Some Voice. Here is a little story that was told by Congressman John Ej Baker of California, the othe( nighjt, when the talk topic of tlu lobby of a hotel took a musica turn, relates The Philadelphii Telegraph. Some time ago the guests at a reception were discussing Ihu relative merits of several song^ sters, when one of the partd turned to a man named Brown] "Not on your life!" was the emphatic responsd of Brownj "I never sang a note that some] body didn't threaten to send liuj riot call. You are probably thinkink of my brother." "Perhaps I am," was the thoughtful rejoinder of the other,] "Has he a heavy bass voice?" "Yes," smiled Brown; "so denied heavy that it makes him bowlegged to carry it." mm A Card of Appreciation. We want to take this methoa of showing out appreciation and kind feelings toward thosq neighbors and friends who were so good and kind to us during the illness of oiit-jvrf&uiMj mother. ) We can find no words that will express our appreciation of these loving and kind deeds. And we pray God's richest blessings may ever dwell witjjj you, and we ever await y<w services. Yours in appreciatijK A. M. Agerton & Family.* What an Obliging Dentist. The dentist stepped quickly into his laboratory and came back with a placard which he hung up on the wall high enough to be seen by the patient in his semi recumbent position. On the card were printed in bold type half a dozen lines of profanity that fairly sizzled. "Is that how you feel?" asked the dentist, sympathetically. The patient nodded his head "Well, keep your eye on the card. I'll soon be through." Lost Tuesday evening a signet ring Finder will return to this office an<! receive reward.
