The Pageland Journal hi 0] March 31, 1915 A r % Local News fr V ^ : ; u Mr. Sam Turner has accepted | a a position as fireman with the 0 Carolina & Northwestern rail- > wa3* at Hartsvillc. Sarah Mae, 5 year-old daugh- ^ ter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Jen- S( kins, of the Dudley section, cut n off a toe with an axe one day a last week. ;1 Carl, the 2-year-old son of Mr. t< and Mrs. J. Osborne Smith, who lives 2 miles north of town, was carried to a Charlotte hospital j ] Monday, where he underwent n an operation for ruptvtre. He is reported as do in g well. ! li I Saturday Mr. S. A. Sellars was 111 showing a hen egg that weighed ; nearly 4 ounces or about as j much as two average eggs. Mr. j (\ Sellers could not be induced to > part with this huge egg, but car- fo ried it back home and ate it. S Policeman Funderhurk killed ? a mad dog under Mr. B. C. Ogburn's residence in the southern part of town Monday afternoon. The dog had a fit near the back o steps and there seemed to be no N doubt that it had rabies. It was d a shepherd dog and, so far as we u have learned no damage was li done by the dog. j n The hoys of Chesterfield conn 111 tv who are in school at the j University at Columbia have c reorganized their county club, \> with L. C. Wannamaker as presi ; s< dent; Robert Turner, vice presi- n dent; Lonnie Knight treasurer; I 1 A. R. Poston, secretary. They i A are to study the schools andjc luaus prooiems 01 tjliesterfielu j a county. Mr. John W. Burr, a farmer N living a mile and a half south of S ^^fcChesterfield, lost his dwelling V contents by fire about <S ir Fridajf^jnomiiie. Tlw?.l?v fire originated a^me top of the I \ shouse at or near a chimney and f quickly enveloped the building 1 in flames. No one was there | ; except Mrs. Burr and nothing of t any note was saved from the [ 1 dwelling. The smoke house nearby caught and burned also,! j but help arrived in time to save ; 1 the meat. There was $1050 in- t surance. Tom is dead. This announce r ment was made early Thursday \ morning, and soon preparations c fnr Knrinl t?ovr/\ 1 1UI UUMIII ?VVIC IIIIUL-I Wil\ . I Olll < was Pageland's yellow cat, ami i everybody liked him. lie had \ many admirable traits, one of: \ the chief of which was his;l friendly feeling for all of his |? human acquaintances. Tom was no respector of persons. 11 None were too high and none i j too low for Tom. A majority of i j those who claim to know Tom's j( history say he was about 7 warsi i . i 1 old, while others stoutly main j tain that he was nearer fifteen. . I I Mr. R. 11. Blakeney says lie was j raised from a kitten by the Mer-! | cantile company, Mr. W. T.!( fulgeworth thinks he was horn 1 i in his store, II. B. Sowell says , he was here before he began keeping a cross roads store about | thirteen years ago. Various other accounts may be had, and 1 it appears that the next legisla- 1 ture will have to appoint an in vestigating committee to settle i 1 the matter. But the fact that ' Tom was a good cat and that lie ' visited much can not be disputed. I le once made headquarters ' at the Mercantile company's but later he moved his belongings ' to the Carolina Supolv com- * pany's where the cheese was ( more plentiful, lie was not a ' greedy cat, even if he did eat I Billy Sellers'part of the salmon |' when they were dining recently. ' His diet was rich, principally i cheese and it has been suggested l that acute indigestion caused his;. death, though some think he ate|s something poison. Tom is dead.
