If this be correct, the forthcom ing candidates must be a toler ably weak-kneed set. If thej are afraid to enter the race the: ought to be beaten, every on* of them. If a man is capable o creditably serving the county he ought to be able to make i good race no matter who enters Rain has come at last and oh mother earth is beginning t< Klrvccrvm o^nin Th ^ * krivoov/tn a^;aiu X 11C iclill 11<I not been general, but enougl has fallen to give relief, aa the long faces are broadenin; into pleased countenances. There seems to be an impres sion on the minds of a goo< many people that the count; supervisor receives twelve hun dred dollars a year, and th Chesterfield Advertiser made statement to that effect not lonj ago. One of the county con: missioners was our authority fo the statement some weeks ag< that his salary is only eight hur dred, and this same commisinnr has again stated that our repoi was right, saying that he is i position to know. So we agai make the assertion that th supervisor of Chesterfield count receives eight hundred dollars years salary and no more. If an person denies this, let him sho\ nis authority. While talking with the Journf man this cammissioner said tha only one countv officer receive twelve hundred dollars, this on being the superintendent c education, who was elected o an eight hundred dollar salary. ] The county commissioners, in session today, says the Wades s boro Messenger of last Monday, received the returns from an \ election. A short while ago an election was held to extend the 0 limits of the Lilesville graded " school district so as to include | the residence of Mr. L. T.Carter, who lived just outside the district. Mr. Caater was registrar, and = pollholder, and his was the only vote cast. The election was unanimously carried by the vote - of one to nothing. 1 Who is W. F. Stevenson"/' k , j Mr. W. F. Stevenson is running for Congress in the Fifth District. Most newspaper readers know something about him, 1 but he has been a busy man and his contact with the district has ( not given the people of the distJ rict the intimate knowledge of j him that they should have. We propose in a few articles to do ; this. He was raised on a farm and worked in the field each year untill he entered college at the 2 age of eighteen. He read law and taught school at the same time and became an active law\ yer in May, 1887. He was elected to the legislature in 18%, 1898 and 1900. He was elected Speak" er of the House in Janeary, 1901. and served until he quit the * House for that time. On his jr election, one of the leading daily papers made the following com ' nient: 1 "In the election of Mr. W. F. Stevenson, of Chesterfield Coun ty to the speakership of the house ^ yesterday the expected has hap0 pened. The expected by us at s least, although the result of the h vote seems to have afforded surd prise in other quarters. On the K 18th of last May we said, 'We c have before referred to Mr. e Stevenson as one of the rising " men in South Carolina politics. ^ He has all the essentials for sue ? cess as his career in the House s of Representative^ has shown. 1 For the last two sessions he has easily been the leader of that body. s He has never been defeated in [ any candidacy. He is a quick 1 debater with an incisive manner, 5 and a peculiarly attractive, * although awkward delivery."' 5 The statement that he has ' never been defeated has to be now qualified, since he ran for 1 Attorney General in 1902 and " was beaten by a small majority. ? The Yorkville Yeoman said then 1 that he was being urged to run s for McLaurin's place and added, 5 "There is no doubt that candit dates for Congress from this the fifth congressional district would feel greatly relieved to see him 5 in the senate." The Fort Mill Timesof January ' 3<>. 1901. after a visit o< it'soditnr 1 to the legislature, said of him: "Tall, slender and loosely made - with a thin crop of sandy hair, a stubby mustache of the same ' hue and a head that appears none too large, one is not apt to guess 1 the abiht) of this remarkable - man. In all South Carolina he is perhaps the most forceful speaker and debater, with perhaps one exception and his elevation to J the speakership was duesolely to y* the recognition of his ability." So now having left the incumbent quietly in office for sixc teen years he asks for the oppora tunity to serve his State and the g Nation as a loyal lieutenant of i- Woodrow Wilson. r Having in four years reached the top in the House of represenU tof 1 ic . I /1 'J^? kiixvo <111 vi Having iiisw uuveiup' ed and shown increased ability in r the subsequent years, both legal rt and legislative, we ask why life n should not be given an opporn tunity to do the same in the e House of Representatives at y Washington? a As a man says, who v has been present at every sesv sion of every legislature since 1900 and knows Mr. Stevenson d and the other public men of the it State from personal acquaints tance and observation. "He will e put the filth district on the map.' >f Look out for a continuance n of this story next week, j (Advertisement! \ .iPSfc T* . . f* Notice to the Democratic Voters of Chesterfield County Under the rules of the Democratic Party a re-enrollment is required. It is very important that each > club have a Secretary and a member of the County Executive Committee. Let the word go out to all the voters to enroll for there is absolutely no reason for any white democrat in Chesterfield county being deprived of the right to vote, provided he is 21 years of age, or shall become so before the general election, and a citizen of the State for two years, i and has resided in the county six months and the voting pre, ,cinct 60 days prior to the prmary.
