Monday morning, the 15th inst.,
about 2 o'clock, the store of W. J.
Corbott, at Privateer, Snmter, was
destroyed by fire. A son of Mr. Hf.
D. Corbelt was slooping in the store
and would have lost his life had he
not been aroused by a negro in time
to escape. Tihe loss was partly
covered by insurance.
Alfred Norwoodi, the thief who
purloined Dr. Moore's horse and
buggy in Kershaw, about two weeks
ago, was arrested in Darlington
county, near Lydia, and carried to
Camden on Monday last. When
arrested he had' on the fine suit of
clothes which were stolen from Mr.
D. B. McLaurin's room at the
DeKalb House just a few days pre
vious to the stealing of Dr. Moore's
horse and buggy.
The new board of county comnmis
sionern of Lexington, met on Mon
day and organized by eleeting Mr.
Wmn. Mf..Johnson chairman, and Mr.
John Fox, secretary. No accounts
were allowed except for outside pan
pers and an account of the steward
of tihe poorhouse, which were paid.
T. S. Harman was re-elected steward
of the poorhouse. The bond of Col
lector D. I. Hendrix was approved,
and they adjourned to meet on the
first of next month.
On Wednesday night of last week,
John Smith, a young white man who
was convicted of highway robbery
at the late term of court, in Aiken
effected his escatpe from the jail by
digging through the brick wall with
an old iron bolt which he obtained
from The window. After effecting
his escape he furnished Adam John
son -with a small fle. -and saw, and
had not the jailor discovered the
p lot in time, Adam would soon have
been -free.'
