The merits of Addison and Johnson, n* perio
Tflical writers, have been often discussed. The
former. being (ho first author in that style, in
generally placed on higher ground, insomuch
that a scholar and a critic of the present ago in*
forms us,' with even domatical decision, " that
.it is an infallible murk of false taste to prefer
tho Itamblcrs of Johnson to the Spectators of Ad
dison." The merits of those two great men,
however, arc so dissimilar* that, though adapt
ed In promote the same tnd$y the exertions wear
a dv ?inct form, and so varied is genius in its
operation*, no versatile in its nature, that the

of the one might have proceeded from a Pagan
moralist; hut the exhortations of the other foe*
speak the christian divine. I would place Addi
eon on the shelf with Plato, hut the bust of John
son should fill a niche with Socrates. The one
endeavors to efface error, the other to destroy
Kin. If I may bo allowed the distinction, Addi
son addresses the heart, Johnson the snut, of
wan. Their difference of stvle is suited to the
peculiar difference of their efforts. The one has
the hamionv of the spheres ; the other the fer
vor ol the elements. We read a paper of Addi
son* admire, and read on ; we peruse a sentence
of Johnson, ami stop to wonder. The former
lias Mcdiccan symmetry ? the latter Colossal
immensity. Addison evinces Corinthian ele
gance ; Johnson Porick proportions. In the one
we view the lineaments of Parnassian Apollo
ill the other the features of Olympian Jove.
