Tun 'MACKEIIEL Fisminns.----But few are aware of the great extent of the mackerel and other fisheries of this country. It has been estimated that during the summer months, cr rather between June and November, more than twenty thousand vessels are constantly engaged in the dif ferent kinds of fisheries, employing no less than two hundred and fifty thousaid men. By a treaty with Great Britain, American ves.els are allowed the privilege of fishing with in certain limits of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and the quantity of fish taken from this place alone, is truly astonishing. The coast of Newfound. land yields its codfish to the hardy sailor from May until December, while the better class of mackerel are taken from August to October. Many mackerel, however, of a prop er class, are taken along the south. ern shore of our country prior to this, but as a general thing they are deemed worthy of little notice. The Bay of Chalcur, along the coast of Prince Edward's Island, the Magda len Islands and Northumberland Straits, are considered the choicest ,ja ekerel grounds. Here the fleet of vessels congregated at one time wfi-- Oftea_-atetml -te tuo...h=eUlad sail, although, as a general thing, not more than from two to four hn dred vessels sail in company. At eight, when the flcet is safely anchor nd, the lanterns lighted on each ves sel and swinging upon the shrouds, One may fancy himsolf looking upon some huge city lying in repose, with its lamps all trinined anid burning. The bait alone, hiehi is grond up andl thr-own to the fish to keep them about the vessel, is a verny large item in the expense of carrying on the trade. This is either her rings, p(orgics, or clarms, well salted and cleansed, put up expressly for the piurpose. The average cost of it is about three-and-a-half dollars p~er barrel, at least two bar-rels of which are thrown away- per day in good fishing. Allowing at the timge we wore in the Gulf there were two thousand sail, you theni have $10G, 000 per day, thrown a a to lthe fishes, or $100 per vessel for each trip; which is below the actntad amouinlit an&d we thus havec the enor-mous sumi of $d00,000. TIhec method of taking the macke rel is very simple. The vessel is "hIove to,"' and mnen ar-e ar-raunged on the "' ninward '' side, as many as3 can conveniently stand from how to ster-n. Each man is provided with four- hines; onily two can be used int fast, fishing. On each line is attached the hook, which is sunk in to an oblong bit of lead, called a '-jig.'' A bar-rel is placed behind each man, into which the fish arec "snapped'' as caught, the jaw tear ing out as easily as thou~gh madlo of paper. Owing to this tenderness of the jaw, the fish must be hauled very carefully, though with gr-eat rapidity. Oneo man stands '"amid ships,'' throwing the hait, which has been carefully ground, to keep the fish about the vessel, while the hooks are baited with pork rind, a bit of liver, or a ptiece of miacker-el itself. When caught, they amre split, gibbed, scraped, washed in threec waters, andl then salted --the whole being done with astonish ing celerity.
