The House committee, Theodore Sedgwick and Sheerjashuh Boune, of Massachusetts, and Alexander White, of Virginia, reported that bill to the body, which it was passed hn the 5th of February, without discussion. Eight Free States were represented by thirty-one votes, six slave State by twenty four votes; free State majority, seven. The bill received forty-eight yeas to seven stays. Massachusetts gave six yeas to one -nay. This record shows that the free States gassed the first Fugitive Bill." JAMES AND CooPER.--A London paper says, facetiously, that Mr. G. P. R. James, u'n his arrival in America, backed himself, Ifor a large sum, to write ten novels in less tirae than Mr. Fennimoro Cooper would take to write five. At the end of the first wveek, Mr. James had completed four, and had got as far as the two travellers on the ae summer's evening, n the fifth, and was still, when the accounts letn, in wind. At the-same period Mr. Cooper had finished one only and but just arrived at the discovery of the hero's lost grandmother, in the tribe of Esquinmaux, towards the middle of a second; the severe weight of the material besides, was beginning to tell, and he showed visible signs of punihment VILD CAT AND THE ARKANSAS SLAVES. -This Seminole Chief having failed to prsuade his own people to emigrate with hin to the Rio Grande, induced a large party of slaves to run away with a view of seeking freedom under his protection. The Creeks and Seminoles followed the hand, fought them with a loss of one killed on each side, took their women and chil dren to the nnmher of sixty, and carried them back. Their masters camne fordird and reclaimed their property, by paving Ilhe rewards otered, and disposed of such as were considered unprofitable stock to them. After this piece of ill luck Wild Cat went to the Rio Grande again. A CUnRIoUs CLoCx.---An ingenious townsmnain of Dudley is engaged in con structing a very curious clock, which is intended for the Grtat Exhibition of 1851, its chief peculiarity being the length of time it runs withont winding. The clock occupies, in standing, only eight superfi. eial inches; the motive poweor is only 28 lbs., and yet the machinery is so nicely ad justed .hat it will take 426 days to run down. Consequently, the- second-hand will make 613,441 revolutions, and the balance 147,225,t300 vibrations, in the e time. tio H'tAGE OF WEATHERL.-A descent of temperature of London thirteen de grees (of the thbermometer) kills an are. rage of three hundred people! The statis tical account, from which we gather the fact, adds; they wey not all dig In tile very next week the loss of warmth takes place, but the number of deaths is found to in crease -to that extent, over the previous average with a short perio I after the change. Thme fall of temperature, in fict, kills themn as certain as a well directed cannon shont. This shows the necessity of guarding caretully against exposure to excessive chan-es of temperature. Plannel is one of the beat protections, and anm additional garment wvhen the cold increases is another. It imatters not how the wveather is, wvhen the body is in active exercise, but every one should guard against sitting" in a half-warmed room and tooling a senisat ion of chilness, or of going out into the cold while that feeling re mnained. A Paragraph for the Ladies. We recommend the following parag raph to the attention of our lady readers. It is from, no less authority thani the grave London Quarterly Review: 1low To WEAR A SnAwr.--f a lady .sports a shawl at all, and only very few should venture to do so, we should recoim iiends it to be always either falling off or putting on wh'ich produces pretty actin. Or she should wear it upon one shoulder & down tihe other or in some way drawn irrog ularly, so as to break the unmformiity. One of the faits of the present costume, as every real artist. knows, is that it ofl'rs few diagonical lines. Nothing is mnore pieluresque than a line across tihe bust, like the brouod ribbon of tihe order of the garter as worn by Queen Victoria, or thme loose girdle, sloping across the hips in the cos tunme of tihe early Plantagenets. On this very account, thme long scarf shawl is as ,limtmesqiue a thing as a lady can wear. Vith the broad pattern sweeping over one shoulder. and a narrow one or none at all onm time other, it suipplies thme eye with that irregularity which drapery requires; wvhile time slanting formo and colors of tihe border, lying carelessly round time figure gives that .eastern idlea which every shawl mere or less imiplies. Whait Oriental would ever .wear one straight up anmd down, anid umform -on both sides, as otir ladies often do! Singular Testimony. During the last monthm thmere was a sin. ugular instance exiibited at l Air, in Maryland, of time working of the law, which forbids a second trial of a person for a crimme aif wvhich he has once been acqumited. Somie time ago, the body of a man nmamned Iham. mnand was foun~d hearing evident marks of tis having beenm cruelly murdered. Sus picion fastened upon two persons inmed ktump amnd Griffith, who were accordingly ,arrested and brought to trial. Stummp was tried first, and acquitted, thme jury not think -iung theo evidence sutlic:ently strong to wvarrant them in hanging him. Griffith was next put on trial, anid on the 2lth ul., a verdict wvas retturned of 'mnot guilty," omn the iollowinig singular testimony' Stump having been acquitted of the murder, his evidence wtas of Course adlimissi le, arid hie was called to thme stand ini :bchalf of Griffith IDeing sworn lhe was askerl: S.0 you know anythinig of the mmurder of hammonnid!"'
