About two hundred yards from tho Court House stands the spacious building known ; as , $trauss & Co.'s rice and grist mill. As a number of "unpr^vemeuis have becu made there'lutoiyj-the- "ioll6\vhig de scription of the establishment inav not'prove uninteresting to our read ers. . . To begin, let the reader picture to himself a monster stationary engine, on cither side of wnaso boiler HPa huge driving wheel, measuring, six feet in diameter, and calculated, when put in motion, to '"drivo" things in a hurry. This huge engine is .situated under a shed at tho north west end of the main building, and supplies itself with the necessary water from a tank close by, by means of a force pump. It is one of the finest in use, and runs with out as much noise as an old fashioned hand corn mill would make. When desired, all tho ' bcllg" arc properly adjusted and this giant puller puts everything in motion in the building?the rice mill, tnc gvist mill and the plaining ma chine. The process of cleaning, hulling, pounding and polishing rice is very interesting. Messrs. Strauss & Co. have their rice hauled up to the large double door facing Market Street, where it is unloaded and thrown into a large bin on the first floor at the foot of an elevator, which catches it up and conveys it to ihc second story and empties it into two large screens, where it is separated from every par ticlo of trash. From here it passes down stairs into another large screen and is cleaned of sand and grass seeds. Falling at the foot of an elevatot, it is caught up and taken back to tho second story and thrown tit the foot of another elevator which carries it to Il.o third story, where it is thrown into a large hulling mill, the rooks of which measure six feet in diameter and arc said to lie the largest in this ! oounlrv. After it emerges from Ihe hulling mill, it is en.t ried by machinery back to the second floor and thrown into a large wind mill, out of which it. falls at, the foot of an elevator,, which curries it into nnothcr screen that takes away the volunteers lci't in it. by the hulling mill. From this screen il passes into a bin from whence it is carried und emptied into mortars, where it is pounded. Front the mortars it descends {o jliotfi'rst floor at the fcot of an elevator, which carries it up injo a screen which" de termines the various guides of rice. This p 6ce>s completed, it is carried up to the third story again by mentis of elevators and thrown into a wind in ill. h'rom this mill it commences its descent for the last tinto. Bussing. down to the second floor it is -run i ? < i through a polishing machine, whence it descends to the first floor, passes thron h a wind mill, falls into bar rels, and is ready for shipment. it is realty a treat to go through this mill while it is running. | One visit of the sort will make one forget the old-fashioned way of "pestling'' rice. Now you sec a large quantity of rough rice thrown itflo a screen? directly you behold it falling from a wind mill, pounded and polished until it glistens. Messrs. Strauss & Co. purchase laige quantities of rice froin Charles ton, but say that their mill can turn out a better article from the rice raised in the county- This ought to encourage our farmers lo cultivate that staple more extensively. It strikes us it would pay better than cotton. And it is certainly not as hard to grow. Having inspected to onr satisfac tion the rice mill, Mr, Street request ed us to take a peep at their new i plaining machine, which was manu factured at Philadelphia, by Goodcl, Braun & Waters. It is nn improved pattern, and is regulated by weights and gunges, instead of screws and wedges, and, us a mutter of course, works easier and faster, being capa ble of plaining one hundred and .fifty boards, 12x20, per hour. The machine tongues, grooves and beads at the same time, and on weather boarding it, leaves a guagc^mnfk for carpenters to go by, which is a great point gained, and ensures uniformity in putting up that sort of in ate tin I. The lumber wc saw in the y.vd of Messrs. Strauss & Co., was of a supe rior quality, ami wo are assured by them that they saw no other kind. They have a largo saw mill a short distance from Orangcburg, and are prepared to snw any amount of lumber desired. - The sc?no* presented! at-their rice milLj^.. this.place is a lively one, nnd kecj^j ijL.i yininrbcr of persons ' busy. These gentlemen superintend their j own work, mu-thoir own teams, &c. They mnkjB^t?iffl J&.pJwonte 6&% vice weekly to Augusta, Atlanta and other points. ; Wo wish Messrs.
