PcMARS, Sec. TOWN COUNCIL. Tins body meets every second Tuesday after tbc first Monday of each month, for the transaction of regular business. Mayors Court, held whenever occasion \ requires. l o C^JlT^ OUANQEUMIU ENTERPRISE. Under this heading we propose to give at different times a description of the vnrious industries that are so rapidly advancing the material inter ests of our Town. J. Strauss & Co., Rick, Giust and Lumber Mill w-as the first one we visited, and we regret that our description of that, anust he necessarily limited, as they .-are .about enlarging their business to .vueh an extent, that a description of their present mills would not do them justice. Everything with them is life, acti vity, bustle. Elevators constantly nt work, bring eildless quumitcsof rough rice down to be beaten out, and on the other side, a continual stream cf clean lire ready barrelled for market roll oil' to thestote bouse, their Rice .nilI is in constant operation, and not <?i.ly uses up all of the rough rice " ^tgEmjhL'TO tbitr1n?rln*r Tonsille, but they are regularly receiving it by the ?rar hnids front other points. Their Grist and Meal Mill is also ill full blast, and all. day they are kept busy selling and shipping it off, their supply can scarcely equal the demand. * Then comes their Lumber Mill, here they run full time, and all orders lor any description of Lumber, can be filled nt ? days notice, they have a lull supply ou hand from the best grades down, and there need be no tie lay in its delivery. The prices of all of these articles have been lowered lately by this firm considerably below* Charleston prices, and they are enabled to do this be cause Mr. Strauss, a finished tnaclu li est from ? tbc old country, runs these Mills himself, and knows just where to find a leak, and bow to stop it. These gentlemen have on hand a variety of other Articles for sale, such as rice flour for feeding stock at 40cte. for the next GO days. Machine Oil very low down. Second hand Steam Engines of all sizes, and descriptions, and all of these, fit prices that they arc willing to compare with any city. But we will not go further iuto the particulars until their contem plated improvements are finished, when we will publish a further and more detnilcd account of tho working of their establishment, We can now only confess to our urprisc at the energy nnd push the firm have dis played and the gratifying success that has attended it. MESSRS JZLAU <C DM RLE? Have removed to their new brick office in Law Range, they arc now better prepared, than ever, to take care of the interests of their friends. We have upon our table a hand somely prepared catalogue of New berry Co1 lege, Walhalla, S. C. This institution we learn is now in a flour ishing condition, and shows a total of 101 pupils. We return our thanks to the Super intendunt of tho Carolina Military Institute of Charlotte, N. C, for an invitation to attend its commencement exercises on the 24th and 25th of this month. Should our engagements al low, it will afford us pleasure to ac cept. TJ',1 LI j ACE CANNON? We regret to bear that lite above gentleman has bad another attack, of the nature of those, from which he suffered to severely last summer. Wo trust that this will prove only a slight one, and that he will soon be out again, r : Wo regret to learn of the death of atuinfnut son of Mr. and Mrs. Win. Wilcock, on Wednesday Oth inst, he was an Interesting child, about one year obi, and must leave a sad void in the hearts of his parents. We ex tend to them our sincere sympathies. Duly two, pieces of property sold {at sheriffs sale, on Motiduy.last. The lot formerly occupied by Dr^QUveros' drug store, (brought $2,5o5, and the house and lot of estate of Olivcros, opposito Mr.C. D. Kortjohh's store was knocked down at $1,970. EARNEST MENTZEL? 'Wu8^suddenly taken with a sharp attack of Rheumatism about ten days ago, and from which he was slowly re covering, when on Monday last it re turned with such force as to cause his friends considerable anxiety, now we , are glad to know he is again rapidly rceoveriu{r. We usk attention to Mr. Coutant's .?ai d in another column, lie is now pre pared to furnish any one a perfect likeness in oil, at reasonable rates, and of all sizes, Will also take small photographs and fer reo types. Papers in other towns and cities speak highly of Mr. Coutant's abilities. ANOTHER JiRWK STORE? We see that Mr. Van Tassel has begun landing the material for the fine brick store he intends building on his lot next Frnntz Brigg matin's new dore, at the old Mcroney stand. So they keep coining, and still there is room for more. SNAKE STORY? One of our citizens living beyond the Kail Road, killed in his yard the other day, a snake measuring over five feet, a good sized snake for this time of the year! We hear of several being killed in different parts of our Town. Keep a look out for them. The Independent Elliott Hook and Ladder Company were out en Thurs day for practice. The few who were out, and tiny were few ip'WhI, peared to understand their business. Why is it I hat this valuable company is not stronger in numbers? there are lots of young men here whose duty il is to connect themselves with such or ganizations. T. W. Alhergotti is still supplying the hungry citizens of our town with bread, rolls, cakes, &c., from his tem porary quarters, but we arc pleased to sec that the large brick store und bakery built for him is uenring com pletion. They are being put up specially for Mr. Alhcrgotti's use, and will afford him every facility to turn ing out still finer articles of bread, &c, than he now can. MA SO NIC TEMJ?/, /;'? ? We hear it w hispered, that negotia tions are on foot to erect a handsome Brick, Masonic Temple on Main Street, at an early day, it is a good plan, and we hope will be pushed through as rapidly as possible. The order is in a very flourishing condition hccf.and owe it to themselves, and to the gootl of the craft, that they provide a suitable place lor the exercise of.their mystic rites, let us have the Temple by all means. Base Ball Clubs, and Base Ball doings, arc now in order. They have ju&?, organized a new Club at Vances Ferry, called the San tee Club. Officered by W. E. Murray, 1'resi dent, W. D. Palmer, Vicc-Prcsident, A. M. Sncll, Scorer, G. E. Felder, Sectary. The next challenge to the Orange's is now in order, as coming from the San tees. Don't folget the match game be tween tic Orange? and the ('resents of Bamberg to conic off on Wednes day next. ROA TS? We hear great complaints from owners of boats, on the river, that some parties are in the habit of frequently breaking the locks, holding their battcaus, and taking these bat tcausoff for their own use and pleas urcs, we would remind the persons so doing, that the laws are severe, upon any one committing stnh trespass, and boat owners uro tlirctitcuiiikj to briu,r the guilty parties to a settlement, we hope this hint will be taken and the boats allowed to remain where they arc placed by their ownor.s. POST OFFICE? Wo would suggest to our Post Master, that as* tho down mail arrives now in broad day light, that be dis tribute, and deliver tbc mail on the day of its arrival. The'fact appears farcical) that' a newspaper issued in Columbia, only fifty miles away, or a letter written from that point, can not be delivered here, until the day after their deposit in the Columbia Post office. \Yc have heard several complaints' in iregfrd no this matter, , and believe our P. M,, will rectify it, his attention being now called to it. * .1 NUISANCE? iLis a habit of.a good iu.au? cul /?r^iiolljstt?^bii^^iti? around, the depot at night, and also in tho vacant lot corner of Main street and Uialroad avenue, and there spend the night, stretched off ti| full leiigthr unlesg dis- ? turbed by some inconvenient ram. This should^be stropped by our city guar dians, any, o?o -who habitually sleeps thus in tlie open nir, generally means mischief. Tho honest, hard working man, colored or white, always has a roof to shelter him, and the one who sleeps under tho shelter of a tree, in the heart of a town only proves his Iii/.in ess or perhaps worse. The man Win. Brown, arrested under suspicious circumstances at Louisville on Monday, was brought j before Trial Justice Webster yester day on thrco diflcrcnt charges of Petit Larceny, from parties in this Town, and having been caught with the goods in his posession, he owned up to the various charges, and was sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in the common Jail, aggregating fort}' days. Suspicion pointed strongly to Brown as one of tlic incendiaries, con cerned in the burniug of Mr. Shirers house on Sunday morning last, but a close examination failed to elicit any confession, from Brown, or any facti tending to confirm the suspicions. Brown is now in Jail serving out his sentences. A. FISCIIEIt? ": Calls attention iu his new adver tisement to-'1 ly, to his large and va ried stock, which lie has just purchas ed in Charleston, .selecting them him self, they comprise as fine a lot of groceries as have ever been offered in . Sec bis advertisement. , WIiERE IS THAT SIIIllTt? At the first .alarm of the firo on Sunday morning last, an enthusias tic Firemen, and withal, a newly mar? ried man, sprang to his feet, and frantically rushed for his "lied Shirt," but nary shirt was to be found iu the accustomed place. Wife where is my "Ked Shirt?" I thought it was a masquerading shirt,'.and it is iu the loft, packet] hp'with fhe wintor clothes. Great is "Evarts and Beech er is his profit" give me some old clothes to . put, on. .Wiry dear, nil that I have left unpacked is your wedding suit, and the next best. We saw that gentleman at 4 P. M., at the fire in the next best suit waltz ing around the Young America Engine, in a curious frame of mind. 1'inic? Again our town felt its presence, and this time, there remains not a shadow of doubt ns to how it occurred This fire was set, deliberately, and with a purpose, what that purpose was avc cannot say, Ifport runs, that just before, and after its occurrence the at- i tempt was made, unsuccessfully how ever to enter several of the stores down town, whatever the reason, we trust that our police will be able eventually to ferret it out, The building consumed was the large, partly finished dwelling of Mr. Geo. S. Shircr in the eastern section of the Town, beyond tho Kail Bond, the fire breaking out about 3 o'clock Sunday Morning, before nssistaneo could bo rendered the entire building was en veloped, and within an hour nothing was left, of what had promised to bo a really Handsome residence. We arc pleased to learn that Mr. Shircr wns insured in tue Liverpool London & Globe ins. Co. and will not havo to hear the entire loss, although very I much i neon von i enced by the time re quired to replace the building. mm ? um m mm Bjgggg We omitted to notice in our last issue the return of our popular towns man, Mr. Henry Kolm, unlike Ids returns heretofore, he dees not come alone, but brings with, him this time a "fair young bride.?' Our congratula tions and good wishes are extended tn them, and when they celebrate their silver wedding ''may we be there to sec."
