The tables were bounteously supplied with goixl things, and the young folks und eld folks present appeared to enjoy them highly. With batting and croquet, ing, flirting and riding on the waters of the Edisto, the time passed rapidly und agreeably away with all. If all the people who attended this pic-nic arc opposed to tho traffic in spirituous liquors in this town and we suppose they are, (for this was a Tcin pcrauce pic-nic) they can stop it, by electing a strict-cold water Council at the next election. They arc strong enough to carry any election in the town. Wc adyechte justice to all men. We can't see why it is that parties in incorporated places have any more right to sell liquor than those who do not happen to live in them. Stores in the country who do a large and legiti mate business are prohibited from re tailing liquors, while in the town of Oraugeburg, there can he a bar room on every corner. There are merchants in Orangeburg w ho sell liquor, w ho would lose a great deal of their custom if they were to stop it. We know they are willing ami anxious to stop the business if they can be protected in some way that will prevent any one from selling it only for medical or domestic purpo ses. If the Town Council would pass an ordinance placing retail liquor license at 81000 per annum it would shut up every bar-room in the place. Let all our sons and daughters petition the Town Council to this purpose, and sec what will be the result. THE NEW STREET? In company with his honor, Mayor Moseley, and a couple of friends, we had a delightful drive on Thursday afternoon, and were struck with the great improvements made by the pre sent Town Council in the grading of the streets. Rossel or Main street, as it is sometimes called, used to be a hog hole, and at times, almost inipus sable. It is now a fine graded thor oughfare, aud taking into considera tion the immense amount of travel over it, is kept in superb order. Wc drove up thb street to Railroad avenue and thence to the new street just laid out and now under the manipulations of his honor's city laborers, who arc putting tho finish ing touch to it. Sometime since we raised considerable objections to the construction of tin* street, principally because we did not like its terminus, placing the part of the town that would lie between it and Kussel street in mi iiwkwnid shape, being much narrower on the Railroad than on Broughton street, and perhaps pre venting the two short streets from being run through. Upon a careful survey of the whole arrangement we must acknowledge, however, that wc arc much j: leased with the new street, and considering the rights of those whose property it inns through, we must admit that our Town Council has shown considerable wisdom and some science in laying it out. There are some beautiful building lots thus thrown into market, while a large amount of property and a pretty part of the suburbs, by being bordered by this street, becomes consolidated with the more thickly settled portions of the Town. We learn that the Council are endeavoring, ami will be successful, we hope, to get thfe consent of the property holders, to run a street across from the new street through the premises of the Hon. T. \V. Clover and Mr. Austin Bull, to , connect with Russell street fronting near Dr. Elliotts office. This would he a decided improvement to the Town* Also with the South Carolina j Rai load, so as to extend Railroad Avenue to the ncv. street. Thest iniprovments if carried out will not only put in the Market desirable ami valuable building lots, for sale, but will add much to the value of the proper ly in those sections. We would like to sec less cotton-patches and more buildings. We want it to be said of] Orangeburg as the Kcntuckian said of New York city, "He could not seo the tow n for the houses." We never had a doubt of the ability of our city fathers to beautify and adorn any work they undertook, and in their ellbrts to give their constituents a chance to get around Town as well as through it, pleasantly and agreeably, we award them a due amount of success. Our friend Joab W. is a trump card, take him any way you will. We said so before wc tested his champaign and smoked his havanas, we said so while under the delicious influence of these narcotics, ami wc repeat it now in our sober and more mature rc lleetions?at the same, time we don't acknowledge being tight.
