A Splendid Time. The entertainment at Mrs. Dr. Nelsoo's residence on Monday night, for the benefit of the .Ladies sewing Society of the Presbyterian Church, was a decided success in every way. Tho-e who were present say the music was "ju9t splendid," while all the other features of the entertain ment was all that could be desired. Xew Kail Road Agent. As was announced by us a short --time siLCe, Mr. James B. Wallace has be en ar pointed agent at Camden for the fouth Carolina and SCs Rail , Roads, and took charge last week Mr. Wallace is a young man, a native of Camden, possesses excellent qualities as a business man, is courteous and obliging, and will no doubt make a very acceptable agent. He has had several years experience in Rail Road matters. Always L'p With the Times. One of the prertquistes to a successful business is sagacity. This was most signally exemplified a few days since in a business transaction in which one of our most wideawake raercanti'e firms were the principal actors A prominent iS'ew York firm telegraphed Messrs. Baum Bros, on Friday last that they had a lot of fine silk dress goods at panic prices. Messrs. Baura Bros, replied by telegram, and on Monday about midday one of the firm called our reporter in and exhibited to him twenty-five pieces?1000 yards?of beautiful cc'ored silks just in by express. Now, there is nothing so very astonishing about this, except the rap city with which the order was made and filled. But ju9t think of onefrin in Camden receiving 1000 yards of sill; dress goods in one lot; and '.hen, too, our reporter was assured that a like quantity of these goods had been received only six weets or two months ago, not a yard of wl ich remains on hand. And the most astonishing part of the whole I ing :s the price of these goods? only 50 cents a yard. Now York Panic Prices. One thousand jards. Just re ceived Tweit)-live pieces cohreu j Dicss Silks of every shade imngin:j ble at fift\ cint* per yard. ! I( you want to see a real goo. black Silk, ;.t our business place j*o? can find it. Baum Bros. Came Near Being' A Fire I Mr. C. II. Yates, the acccmo latinj. Cashier of the Camden Baifk, cam near having n fire at bis resale Ce 01 Lyttleton street last Thursday mom jing. It seems ttuit soot had c> lee ted on the tin through which tie stovepipe passed into the chimney. A spark falling into it set it on fire, which, had it not been d scoverod in time, would Boon have spread be jond control. A few buckets c water being handy it was so >n ex tiuguished, ami r.o aiarui was giver. Fiie at I'afting Creek. We are informed ih.vt Mr. John J. | Cato, living in the lifting Creel, section in Sumter county, just beyond the Kershaw line, had his barn I and stables burned one night last week, lie lost a considerable amount of cotton, cotton seed, com, fodder, &c., and came near 1 s ng his residence. Mr. Cata was the manager at Raffing Creekprecinot from whom the boxes were taken by masked men the night before the recent election, and who was arrested on a charge of violating the election laws. It is said the fire was the work of an j incendiary. At It Again, Neighbor We attend to onr business, and this is the cause of our success. Our neighbor is complain-rig again?this time in anoher direction. Too much picture, he says; and it looks like imi- ^ biting the Herald. Well, we thank , our neighbor for the compliment, for 1 some people have learned enough, but we are willing to learn more, and ( especially from that grand old news ( paper, the New York Ilerald. We did underrate our neighbor, though. * lor we did not believe that he knew that such a paper was in existence. 1 It is though, and we learn by it. j We subscribe to it. and we learn from it every day, and ono great lesson ' which that trrand old rmner teaches 1 is?l>uy cheap and sell cheap. This ( motto wo have adopted. r The picture heading our advertisement, which annoys you so much, is simply an illustration of the House ] we do business in. There is no barm ] iu that, and nothing that can hurt . you, r.eightor. Do not worry over it. We do not worry about you. baum 13kos. The Ilobkirk Inn. Mr. F. W.
