before the war and since, that its condition

to bo most profitable investments. The
machinery employed in theui is said to
he of the uowest and best kind, fully
equal, if not superior, to that of the
North. In addition to these various
kinds of manufactories which now happily
form an important part of our
wealth, wc have in many oihor wa\s
vastly improved. Our railroads are
now faf in advance of what they were
a few years afro, and our system of
travol aud freight", with a few miserly
first, nlnss. Lands, too.

are as valuable as they ever were, and
u uianv instances, have appreciated
enormously. The cultivation of them
is far superior to what- it was in ante
Lclltim days, and the great increase of
our main staple from four millions of
bales to six millions proves very con
clusively that our system of cultivation
has vastly improved. To fact, everything
goes far to prove that this good
Southern land of ours is destined to be j
[the fairest and richest in America. I
All we have tj do is to keep abreasti
of the time9, have liberal views, and;
accord to all men that which wo claim
for ourselves; preserve inviolable the
priuciples of our Government, and tho
day will not ba far off when we can
boast of our wealth and greatness.

deplorable indeed. Over 10,000 of
them are said to be almost at the point
of starvation, and subscriptions are dow

Many years ago a fortune teller prophesied
that a young girl at Freshkills
L. I., would die when she was 30 years
old. Last week, punctual to the day,
she died, ffust before sunrise, her
mother and sister say, they saw a shadow
come into tho room through a win*
dow, and hover over the bed where
Mrs. Newman lay dyiug. It remained
only a few seconds, after which she was
found to be dead.
A negro in jail ot Foraythe, Ga., has
outdone Dr. Tanner, havim; fasted
something over two months, but drinks
water freely. Physicians declare him
sane. He cannot walk a stop, has lost
sixty pounds, and is a perfect skeleton.

At a convention of colored people in
Jefferson, Mo., on the 25th in?t., thoy
adopted a long series of resolutions
(announcing rs "the new Monroe Doc
trine of the Era of Emancipation" that
j the negro voter shall not henceforth,
I considor himself a subject for coloniza-'
tion and appropriation by any political
party, but his political right to think,
speak and act for himself, shall be uotrammelled
by party chains. The Convention
is said to have been entirely
harmonious in its political feature, but
a general disposition was manifested to
throw off the party yoke.
The Atlanta Herald is responsible
for the following: "There is a gentleman
in this city who guarantees to
manufacture boots and shoes, the original
soles of which will outwear any pair
of uppers ever made of leather, so that
half soling will become a thing of the
past. This is based on test and ex pen
rieDce, and while it may be good news
for the public, it comes hard on the

has been made for a patent, and it is
possible that a manufacturing stock
company can bo formed here without
going East.

One of the great political questions
that will agitate our people one of

war a high duty was imposed on many

The Republicans will never

no wrjl defined policy on this question.
Their "tariff fur revenue only" dues not
mean much, ami it is doubtful whether
thoy would afford the ne.dvd relief if
they were iu power, for ti er.* ore many
Democrats who incline to a high protective
niriff. It may be that, when
th*- old war issues di? out, one of the
leading issues of the new party w ill he
the tariff. The South, must then dcc

East or West. Meantime let us elect
to Congress none but men who wiil advocate

the mountains of this Stale. The girls
wear dresses even shorter than (he
regulation walking skirt. They have
knapsack* strapped over their shoulders,
wear broad bottomed, easy shoes, dark
hose, and are lixed up for comfort.
They propose to take a trip on foot
through all of the mountainous counties
of North Carolina. In their baggage
they have hammocks which will b?|
used in ease they have to camp out at
night. The trip will consume about
two months and cover a district of six
or eight huudred miles. The girla are
all young, the oldest, probably not over
twentyrtwo uud the youngest sixteen.
They are lithe and hearty and appear I
to bo able to make fiftc-n or twenty'
iuil?-8 n day easily. Thr* e of the fair
pedestrians are from Virginia and the
other three from Maryland. Three of
them nr.- pupils of a well known (seminary
in Virginia and the daughters of
well known business men in that State,
Their present novel and independent
trip is made principally to gratify one
or two of the party, who could not afford
to travel on railroads. When o
desire was expressed by them in th$
presence of the other four girls who
make up the party, to see the magnifi
cent scenery of the western part of this
State, it was at once proposed to tramp
it through the country, and thus avoid
railroad fares and at the same time af?
ford a better view of the scenery, The
party will leave here to morrow for Ashville
in Bucombe County. Tbey do
not manifest any fear of being molested
in the Io?g and lonesome route. Tbev
say they are fully ablo to take eare of
themselves. Part of the way is through '
dense forests, tlrrough which even many
UariDg men are not anxious to go, especially
at night.
