A3 it is, the mail matter frequently arrives here, wet and damaged to such an extent that it is almost impossible to decipher the address, and we therefore appeal to the authorities to have this very important matter attended to without delay, as otherwise, serious losses may occur. Jail T)ei iv^ry.^Ou lu$t Friday mornlog, two prisonors made their escape from the County jail. Their names are Jim. Ross and Daniel Wadcn. As the jailoress went up to open the -cell doors, as Was the custom, she found these two out and armed with heavy billets of wood, with which they advanced upon her. She having nothing where with to resist such a ferocious assault, wisely got out of their way, whereupon they moved on down stairs and succeeded in effecting their escape, though pursued to some distance by the son of the jailoress. I They had been arrested for Larceny and would probably have remained in jail, unless ^ bailed, until May term of Court, as after, the trial of Mr. Huuter, tbe civil business was taken up. The jail is very insecure and it is not at all surprising that prisoners should escape. Indeed, the wonder is that more do not conceive a nrt carry opt tneir escape. The Concert on Thursday Evening.? On last Thursday evening, a brilliant and appreciative audience assembled at . Town Hall, tosce ftid heir the'performances- of the Musical Glub. The stage has been thoroughly renovated, and looks very well indeed. Just over the drop curtain, are the words "Art * Union"- iiv large gilt letters, while the inferior and rear of the stage wa6 handsomely draped and otherwise ornamented, presenting a tout entemble very pleasto behold, performance consisted of Instrumental pud local music,- tableaux and a farce. In all of them, the performers deserved and" received hearty encores. Court Adjourned.?On Saturday evening, Judge Melton closed his labors at the January term of the Circuit Court. Monday and Tuesday were occupied with hearing the cases of The State vs. II. L. Hunter, for murder, and two others of tio public interest. In Mr. Hunter's case, the jury rendered a verdict of not guilty after a short retirement. Mr. Hunter was ably defended by Messrs. Shannon & Lining, and DePass & Hay, while the State was represented by J. M. Davis, Esq. The circumstances of the case we have previously narrated, and | therefore deem it unnecessary to relate them a second time. During the balance of the week, civil j cases were heard, and the juries were dis- i missed on Thursday afternoon The follow- 1 verdicts were rendered: Samuel McGowan vs. J. P.
