AGRICULTURAL. X *Vjv~7 s I s * i. Renovating Poor Land.. For sneetlilv imurovinc tho noor lands of Southside Virginia, there m nothing better than the common field pea. It in a plant that derives milch of its support from the air, and will therefore do well on poor "ZiT&itfc It germinates with certainty and grows rapidly, and two crops of it may be raised on the same soil .the same year. A judicious ."<?'1* management of field peas and marl Jij . will tender fertile any soil where peas will guow^and land "too poor , to sprout a pea"'is fit for no agrismltural purpose. For improving hind simply, I like it better than clover.. #There is less uncertainty and less* trouble about it, and il may be done in shorter time. __ . Sow the first crop at the rate of , one and a half bushels to the acre, as soon as- all danger from frost is over, say last of April'. As soor as t?he vines-are pretty well in bloom, jwrtto a^lew young peas on earnest vinesj turn all under and sow i down and harrow in another bush"STahtT a half to the acre. These will be ready to turn under, if von 60 intend, in September, when you can seed down to wheat if you like, o^ winter, oats. Or if a late fall, and you are short of corn, you can *** grvePyour 'pokers a lift by turning then? in to eat off the peas. I would advise every farmer to plant at least one field for his hogs. The Southern field pea is so useful in several aspects that it apr-peare not a-little strange that no tlgr ^ihUuae.is made of it, both as an improver of poor soils and as long forage for stock. The vines thoroughly cured make one of the best long feeds known. The best way to cure 19 to cut, and not pull the vines, and let wilt in the sun a day or two. Then make a rail pen and put a floor of ^juils two or three rails from the f ^ground; now raise the sides four 'rails to the side, and another layer of vines then anot her floor, and so on until you have it as high as you wish. Now set two forks" on either side, lay on a ridge pole, r and make a roof of stalks to >?? shed the rain. The vines will cure ^nicely and keep sweek all the winter.?Rural Messenger. " Cheap Fodder. i -e We refer our readers to two val?uable communications . i.n a late ",J: issue of this paper on the rais. > ing of fodder as a separate crop. ^:ioThe plan proposed by both correspondents is to sow corn in drills 18 inches to two feet apart, two or 'three bnshels per acre, in good ' ' soil.* Let it stand thick in the a "( drill as it will come?the thicker the better, since the stalk will be emaller and more readily eaten by - stock when cured. Run two or three furrows to each row, with a rooter or shovel when the corn is one <j>r tp-o feet high. This small anoint of cultivation is all that is required. When the tassel blooms yrejl over tho patch, cnt down the whole and cure in shocks, stalk ^.^and all together. The joices and sngar of the plant are all saved, a..?and the forage will be far moro nutritions and palatable to stock. Working animals will eat it down to the last joint, and keep fat on it with but half rations of corn. One correspondent states the fTrot rrnrr mav Ha eavpfl in frnnd wr ?j ? ? i? ... 0~~time for a second sowing on the same grpund if a good season occurs at the right timo. Six to ten thousand pounds per acre is a fair yield for the crop. So simple and easy a method Bbould not go untried. One single acre on a farm would be a vast r \ h^lp in the winter feeding. No one * ' ever- has too much fodder.?Ban lipr of the South. Extra Food for Hogs.?Coal #*sbes and clay are beneficial for iio|?8 when shut up to fatten. Hogs are very fond of cinders, coal, ashes and clay, and improve in condition in eating a certain por. lion of them every day. Some ^rstfns are unable to account for --this singular propensity in swine. very fcrnd of egg shells, lime, sand etc., and it is well known these substances are necessary in order to Torm the" shells of eggs -*ud-HtO furnish material for bone, fowfeV Now, it is-reasonable to j suppose that swine eat ashes for, i ** . T ^ ^ the purpose of supplying the material for tlieir bones, and this singt ular'instirfbt in animals, so low in the scale of intelligence, is truly" wonderful*, for ashes contain ingredients which are -necessary to form bones, viz i Clay, sillicn^eoal, soft lime, stone, and rotten wood, etc., 'with, their food, which contain the necessary ingredients; but when they are penned up they endeavor to supply the material necessary for keeping up their frame's, by devouring asnes and cinders. Let them hare plenty of them. - - Poultry.?Feed your poultry on raw onions chopped fine, mixed Wilii ocner joqkj, uuuut oiicb ur twice a week.. jt is better than a dozen cures for chicken cholera. Fowls exposed to dampness are apt to be troubled with catarrh, which will run to croup if not attended to. Red pepper mixed with soft feed, fed- several times a week, will remove the cold'. Pulverized1 .charcoal;, given occasionally, is a preventative of putrid affections, to which fowls are very subject. Sitting liens can be cured by putting water in a vessel to the depth of one inch, putting the hen into it, and covering the top of the vessel for twenty-four hours. The vessel should be deep enough to allow the hen to stand. Pulverized' chalk administered with softer feed will cure the diarrhoea. This disorder is caused by want of variety in food, or too much green food. Garlic fed onco or twice a week is excellent for colds. Gardner's Magazine. SHANNON & LINING.. Attorney's at law &c. Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, For Diseases of the Throat and Lungs,, such as Coughs, Colds, TEhooplng Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma, and Consumption. Probably never before in tbe whole history of medicine, has any tiling won so widely ana so deeply upon the confidence of mankind, as this excellent remedy for pulmonary complaints. Through along scries of years, and among most of the races of men it has risen higher and higher in their estimation, as it has become better known. Its uniform character and power to cure the various affections of the lungs and throat, have made it known as a reliable protector against them. While adapted to milder forms of disease and to young children, it is at the same time tbe most effectual remedy that can be given for incipient consumption, and tbe dangerous affections of tho throat and lungs. As a provision against suddan attacks of Croup, it should be kept on hand in every family, ana indeed as all are sometimes subject to colas and coughs, all should be provided with this antidote for them. Although settled Consumption is thought incurable, still great numbers of dasca where the disease seemed settled, have been completely cured, and the patient restored to sound health by the Cherry Pectoral. So complete ia its mastery over the disorders of the Luiigs and Throat, that the most obstinate of them yield to It. "When nothing else could reach thera. under the Cherry Pectoral they subside and disappear. Singers and Public Speakers Una great protection from it. Asthma is always relieved and often wholly cured by it. Bronchitis is generally cured by taking the Cherry Pectoral In small and frequent doses. So generally are its virtues known, that we need not publish the certificates of them here, or do more than assure the public that its qualities are fully maintained. : Ayer's Ague Cure, For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever, Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, fto., and indeed all the affections which arise from malarious, marsh, or Trlagmatio poisons. As its name Implies, it does Cure, and does not fail. Containing neither Arsenic, Quinine, Bisninth, Zino, nor any other mineral or poisonous substance whatever, it in nowise injures any patient. The number and importance of its cares in the ague districts, are literally beyond account, and we believe without a parallel In the history of Ague medicine. Our pride is gratified by the acknowledgments we receive of the radical cures effected in obstinate cases, and where other remedies had wholly failed. .Unacclimated persons, either resident inj or travelling through miasmatic localities, will be pro tec tea by taking the AO UE CURE daily. For Liver Complaints, arising from torpidity of the Liver, it la an excellent remedy, stimulating the Liver hito healthy activity. For Bilious Disorders and Liver Complaints, it Is on excellent remedy, producing many truly remnrkablo cores, where other medicines had failed. Prepared by Dr. J. C.
