POETRY. From the Rockingham (Va } Register. Wasting Away. The Destroyer comes with noiseless step And begins his work of decay ; N fcslowlv sapping the fountain ot hie And wasting its vigor away. The la.nruid eve and the weary frame, Grows weaker every Jay, And the lone night watch of sleepless one Seems endless in its stay. The long, weary hours, as one by one. They lake their place in the past, Whisper in low and solemn tones, "Life is hastening fast." Oh, treasured lite, mat priceless boom, J Which none but God can give, How fondly we cling to thee and say, C "Oh, Father, let us I:ve." * The green earth seems so fair and bright, So lull ol life and joy; So much to fill the heurt with delight, * And the mind and soul employ. So many ties that binds us here? Strong and hard to be riven? That cluster so sweetly round our path, w With the glow and hriglitttes ol .icuven. " But life's brightest visions we know, Are but the faint gleams front above, ' Where is fullness of joy evermore, " And life an eternity of love. Then, should we murmur as the light grows dim, " And the weary step draws near To the shadowy vale where the night I' sets in, !l Whose morning dawns not here. V No, no. let us how to His holy will, ^ Who doctli nil things well; And no sad thought or murmuring ^ word, The trusting bosom swell. ' He can give us life, eternal life. Then let us entreat Him no more, For the life that now is, or length t f ?' days ^ But only for life evermore. Rawley Spring, Ya , Julv 17. 1WJ.
