THE HISTORY OF A LIIEDay dawned : Within a curtained room. Filled to faintncss with periume, t A lady lay, at point of doom. | Day closed : A child had seen the light, I But for the ludy fair and bright, She rested in undreaming nigbt. I Spring rose: The lady's grave was green, . a rid nwflr it nffftt-w-nrdu win aean I . A gentle boy, with thoughtful mien. ' Years fled : fie wore a manly face, And struggled in the world's rough race, And won, at laat, a loftly place. And then?be died ; Behold before ye, . Humanity's poor sum and story, t life?death?and all that is of glory. "Work and Fun.?When we look ut the vast amount of agricultural ituple- ' moots unci machines gathered together 1 at cur agricultural fuits, it seems sur- 1 pricing that there cau bo anything left to bo fouad out. Yet there is one thing 1 whioh escaped the attention of all iuveutive geniuses?aud that i?, how to a utilize amusements. In this, the past 1 ages seem to huve hud au ud vantage over ours. Their corn-hunting parties and corn-shelling meetings wire always s >ci ' slles, wl.erc use ul woik was also done. ' Eveu the liaid h.bor ill the ancient wheat-field was enlivened by the antiei- ' pation of the merry time soon to follow 1 in the harvest home. Poets sti'l sing of the "cherry song" * u the farmer turns the yielding sod, or * of the "merry whistling" of the drover boy; but tbcy arc among tho*ethings a wo often road of, but seldom sec. Indeed, with the exception of Dorcas socio- ' ties, or the sewing circles in whieh ladies a indulge, we doubt wliether, among either sect of humanity, there is anything 1 left in whicb pleasure and profit, an.use- c ncut and hard work, aro happily com- c biued. l' We are reminded of all these departed joyi by learning liow they churn butter io Chili. It is said they do it by tying the milk in a sack made of akin and ^ plaeing it on the back of a donkey, when- ^ ever tliey are to have a donkey race.? ^ Now, it occurs to us that we can turn our horse races at the country fairs to some good uses. We arc told that our t agricultural societies could not exist r without thin species of amusement; while | on the other hand, there are many good i people wbo aro determined not to sup- i port those annual exhibitions fo long us i the horse trots are tolerated. Why not i compromise ? Let caoh race horse carry a bag of cream across his back, in front ? t ' | of the rider, and then let the races go 1 on ! Wc don't think the fan will be ar y the less, while it certainly ought to eouciliate the utility people. Wasn't there 1 fun in the old Western homes, where at ? night the members of the family gathered round tho burning loge, and churned their to-morrow's supply of butter in old wine-bottles? They sang and laughed as they shook the cream, and shook their sides as well. They never cared how Lng it took; but now, with our patent ' impmvmcnts, we have nothing but sighs ( and ?>bi from the poor juveniles who , turn the machine in silence otlnrwise, i except once in a while to express tho ' peevish wonder, I;why don't this batter ' oome." 8ons of genias, hero i* a chrneo for ] you. While oar daughters are at their I mclodeons, can yon not contrive an at- 1 taehment by which the sewing-machine J may go on with it? Even those of onr , boys who praotiee with darnb bells may j ktornto drive them against seeks filled 1 with beans?thrashing and anius ng themselves at the fame time. Thus we 1 may gradutHy return to the good old 1 times'; and when the Turkish Sultan nes; visits an Kn?li-h bail, t?? wonder why these gentleman and ladies do .not make tlitir aeivanta do (lie hard Work of Jancing, lie may be still ustonislud when lie aeca that, while performing on the "light fantastic tee," they uro treading out the wheat a* well. We have also been shewn 21 shocks of outs raised by our fellow townsman, R. G. Stone, from less than ono quarter ? f an acre of old field land. <This yield was produced by u lib rul und judicious use of the Wattd>r Fertilizer ah>nc, no attention having been given to* the proper breaking up of tire laud.
