~ ro imiY. THE PERPLEXED HOUSEKEEPER SOLILOQUY. Eivish I had a dozen pairs Of hands this, very minute; tm ennn not all these things to richts? The very deuce is in it. Here's n big washing to be done, One pair of han^s to do it, Sheets, shirts, ar.d stockings- coats and pants How will I ever get through it. Dinner to get for six or moro, No loaf left over from Sunday ; And baby a- cross as he can liveHe's always so on Monday. And there's the cream, 'tis getting sour And must forthwith be churning, And here's Bob wants a button on? Which way shall 1 be turning: 'Tis time the meat was in the pot, The bread was worked for baking, The clothes were taken from the boil? O dear, the baby's waking. Hush, baby, there, hu6h-th-sh, I wish he'd sleep a little, '1511 I could run and get seme wood, To hurry up the kettle. O deor.'.O dear, if P comes home, And finds things in this pother, Ile'll just begin to tell me all About his tidy mother. How nice her kitchen used to be, Her dinner always ready, Exactly when the noon-bell rang? Hush, hush, dear little Freddy. And then will come some hasty word Right out.before I'm thinking, They say that hasty words from wives fv. oei eyucr iiivu tu ummui^. Now isn't a great idea, That men should take to sinning, Because a weary halt-sick wife Can't always smile so winning. When 1 wee young Pused to earn My living without tiouble, Had clothes and pocket-money, too, And hours of leisure double. 1 never dreamed of such a (ate, When I a lass was courted? Wile, mother, nurse, seamstress, cook, housekeeper, chambermaid laundress dairywoman, and scrub generally, doing the wotk of six, For the sake of being supported. aguicultuueT THE COW PEA AS A FERTILIZER FOR WHEATWe have long been satisfied, front actual experiment, that the common cow poa of the Southern Stales, when properly managed, afford the best and, at the same time, the cheapest medium for the restoration of our exhausted cotton fields. Its effects have been as lasting and a< marked upon thcfeitility of our soils as that of clo'cr upon the worn and exhausted lands of Virginia and Maryland. The main reason why the cow pea has not been heretofore extensively used as a fertilizer was owing to tin fact that previous to emancipation out planters would not give up a sufficient portion of their lands to await the ra ther slow effects of this most valuable fertilizer. Now, however, when every planter has a large proportion of his poor lands lying idle, there is no exeu?e why the poa should not bo s^t in every field not absolutely necessary for corn or cotton. Now is the best time to plant the pea, and we desire to givo our agrieul tural friends the result of a careful ex???"'?" Kv n nhintnrin frwinnet pCliUiVUb Uiuuv *JJ ? county to encourage them to make similar efforts. OurGwinnet pl.ntcr hod a piece of old exhausted land, twenty acres of which had been lying in Broom sage for a number of years. This he broke deep with a turn plow in the summer, and in the succeeding Fall put down in wheat. The crop, carefully measured, was a little less than Jour bushels to the acre. As soon as the wheat was cut he sowed peas at the rate of two bushels to the acre. Early in October the peas wcro turned under with a deep furrow, auda few weeks latrr wheat was sown and carefully harrowed in'upon the pea sod. The yield from the crop was nint bushels to the acre, a little more than double the first year's crop. The field was again sown in pens as 60nn as the wheat was harvested and turned under as before in the Fall, and wheat sown upon the soil. The yield this year was seventeen and a half lush els. The fourth year, with the same treat intnt, he made twenty-seven bushels and this (the fifth year) the crop bid: fair to make forty bunhelsi. Nothin; has been applied to the land as a fcr tilizer except the pea, and we find tha in five years, with the cow pea alont the production has been increased ten fold. This actual experiment rpeak more for the pea than any arguracn which we could make. We trust some of our planting friend will bo induced to try the pea on ih j next crop of wheat and let us know result of their expciimcnt. Aujuxtu Chronicle & Sentinel Sugar can he made from s aiiUM and with- Great 1'hofit. When at Louisville. Ky., last week, visited the works of tlio Southern S ?0 Company, for the purpose of cxa I. ining the process by which they mi facturc sugar from sorghum. We In for a-longtime I clicred a process wo be discovered by which, under cert conditions, sugar could be made f: the sorghum, as ccrrainly as it is fi the tropical and West India cane, were most happily surprised, on visit to the above named works, to I our faith so soon realized, by disco\ ios that have already been tested by tensive experience in the succcst manufacture of sugar from thesorgh plant; and this', too, in quantities t place it among the most profitable of cre~s. But we cannot go into a note description of the prociss?suf ' it to say that the entire nuichincty t one would necessarily purchase, lies the crushing mill, co-t only about i hundred dollars. The disagrees ' sorghum taste is removed from b sytup and sugar, and every gullot syrup yields from four to six pound: beautiful sugar?equal to the best M Orleans brown, and four to six pou 1 of syrup: 1 Mr. J.
