V ' " POETRY. J GENTLE WORDS. r The sun may warm the grass 10 life, The dew the drooping flower, The eyes grow bright and watch the light I Of autumn.s opening hour? t But words that breathe of tenderness, ^ And smiles we know are true, ^ Arc warmer than the summer time, And brighter than the dew. ^ It is not much the world can give, all its subtle" art, I And gold and gems are not the things t Tositisfy the heart; ^ But 0, if those who cluster round The altar and the heortn, 1 Have gentle words and loving smiles, a How beautiful is earth. a AGRICULlt'R^ [ PLASTER OF PARIS AS A FER- 0 TILIZER. If one must use some commercial manure, he will do well to m?ke a trial of Plaster of Paris, unless h( should live where he cannot obtain it without great ? expense. 0 That it generally produces favorable t] results wherever used, is t. well estab- w tablishcd fact; but the process by which n those results are gained does not appear. . Some observers think that the plaster retains the fertilizing gas that arises from decaying vegetable qiatter, and gives it eff at the proper time for the ^ use of the growing plant. Others think ^ that the effect is due to the lime and d sulphur of which plaster is composed? it is sulphate of lime. % Flint, in his book on Grasses, says: "The infectious odor which rises from c decaying vegetable matter from the ma- D nure heap, and imperceptibly from the ^ whole surface of the earth, is one of the d most important elements for the growth / of the plant. Plaster fixes this, and the firsfr^owcr washes it into the earth c to feed the roots of plants. u The relative value of manure depends, in a measure, according to the generally received opinion on this subject, upon the amount of this noxious odor, ? av i_ i _ or uic aiimiuiiia, uuuiiuouiy auuyvu as hartshorn, is an exceedingly powerful J stimulant. Nor will it appear mimportant when we bear in mind that two and one quarter pounds of this ammonia lost by fermentation, is equal according to some, to the loss of one hundred and fifty poutfds of grass or grain." One fact seems to favor this view of the case, and that is, that plaster, when plowed under, produces no perceptible ^ effect on the crop; but when sown upon the surface proves a powerful stimulant ^ to the growing jjlant Sir Humphry Davy found, by experiment, that the srshes of an acre of red" clover contain no less than three bushels , of plaster of Paris. This fact would seem to prove that the substance of the plaster is absorbed by the plant, for there is no plant that shows the effect of plaster moro readily than clover. In many instances, it is believed that from one to two bushels of plaster sown on an acre of clover has nearly doubled ] the crop. On a light or sandy soil plaster is of very little valnc, but on tbe surface of damp and compact soil may be used to great advantage. It is useful on pastures as well as on meadows; and when mixed about half and half with wood ] ashes, and dropped on corn or potatoes soon as they come up, about a heaping spoonful to tbe bill, tbe result will be ( manifest. . It; was common fbr farmers ib New a England; forty years ago, to haul plas- i ter in tbe rock a hundred and twenty miles, break it into pieces about the size .flU -5 * 1 *" ut uius.ury nuis, sdq 13K0 11 10 tne mill, where it was ground for use on their ftrms. The prime cost of the article was trifling, but the labor bestowed upon it brought it up to a high price; but as they persevered in the practice . year after we conclude that they believed it to be a paying operation. St. Louis Jour. Ag. ] Systematic Manuring.?All permanent success in Agriculture depends on manuring. This is true everywhere, but is most especially bo on the Atlantic slope of our country, where soils are ttinner than in the Mississippi Yalley. t "Whilst every body admifc-this truth, yet J how few give the proper amount of at- 1 tention and systematic labor to manuring ! An efficient system of manuring . will not only keep the soil up to the standard of fertility in which we find it, j but will gradually but certainly improve it. Land which was once good can le made so again at a moderate outlay, and ; ^ that naturally poor can bo greatly itn- " proved, provided it has u good mi1?ho1 j 13ul to aCColiJpilau lhu> Wii Ll'UK. .... i work intelligently and systematically. Political economist!* long ago discovered hat the division of labor is a source of iation.il wealth. Plantation economy requires that this >rinciple be carried out so far as pracicable. It is therefore a good plan, to Ictail a portion of the Working force or the special purpose of manuring, ceeninp them at it throughout the year ?r o n the tide water region where vegct'a>!e deposits and marl of lime abound, he adoption of this plan secures to the armcr a surprising amount of manure n the course of the year. A man with mule and cart working two hundred nd fifty d:iys, (which is not an overstimatc for the year) and collecting trenty loads of manurial matter daily, rill cover fifljr acres of land at the rate f one hundred loads per acre. Supose that this will add three hundred ounds of seed cotton, worth six cents er pound to the production of each ere. This will make an aggregate of ine hundred dollars gross as the result fthe labor of a man aud mule, besides tie permanent improvement to the soil hich roults from a sj'stem of high januring.?
