A "Farmer," writing to the Macon n I Telegraph on the cotton worm, refer- i cnce to an article from the Sclma (Ala.) i Times, takes issue with the writer. lie says: The writer states that he saw tlic egg and worm of a cottoD fly found in the ' i t r cotton stalk, etc. f rom tnc History ui insects, I can find no facts confirming his statements, and I dare say the wri- , tcr is totally in error as to their mode ] of propagation. t The fly lays the egg in summer, on tire tender parts of the cotton plant, the worm is speedily hatched out, growing rapidly to and forming the cocoon, in which state the larvm exists all winter. It, however, may go through the process several times during summer. Id the spring it cuts out of its self-made prison, and goes forth as bciore. Insects that deposit their egg 1 in the pith of stalks have a caudal appendage with which they pierce the -1 stalk and lay their eggs. The various 1 species of locusts, the Hessian fly arc example*. I The millet that docs the mischief in j our cotton fields have no such append- ' age, nor do they ever vary in their eat- ! ural course, we suppose; first, the fly j which deposits the egg; then the worm; < next the cocoon; and, lastly, the fly again. If the writer in question will ( enly reflect that a cocoon cannot be contained within the small compass ol g a cotton stalk, he will see the fallacy of his assertions. There are hundreds of other insects that prey upon the cotton ^pbnt, some * of which, no doubt, deposit tneir eggs i in the stalk and make that their winter quarters. If the writer will advocate cleanliness generally on a farm, in my humble judgement, he will contribute somewhat to abate the trouble; for in old fences, hedges, under old logs, brush piles, are to be found count- ( less numbers of those oblong pods in question, air tight, and perfectly protect- j ed from the winter blasts. Sonic species of lartrae arc propagated in the soil or J m in the roots ot decayed trees?the common sting worm, for instance?but the , [ cotton worm never, save by accident, I j , suppose. I ( X am anxious, Messrs. Editors, that J1 the worm question shall be solved, and j 1 hope some close observer will illuminate j f the subject; for in finding out the hab-1 1 t*q. niifl mrinnt r-lmjirrna nf mir irr.vntotf ' pest (always 6ave one?United States ! Congress,) we may find the correct rem- j edy iD getting rid of them. | r Farmer, j Putnam county, Ga., Dec. 23. Beep Plowing Shoold be Done ; 1 Gradually.?A correspondent who j 1 has one of the finest and most produc-!f tive farmsin Western New York, which he keeps in a high state of fertility by ; thorough cultivation and the growth of 1 red clover, makes the following sensible J 1 remarks in regard to deep plowing: "A ;r sudden bringing up to the surface of i j many inches of heavy clay that has nev-! ( er been punctured by the roots of plants,' and this, too, in the spring of the year, } would probably injure the first crop.? j Clay subsoils are best brought to the surface two or three inches at a time, | ] nnA Viot in tllO lull on fVl'lf fVl.\ fi.ni.ir. ' UUVl tuuv AVAhty WW v??MU utu 1IU913 ui j winter may mellow theru down. The !c next spring, plow, say twice as many j inches deep as the clay subcoil is thick. This will mix things up so that even a | crop of corn would be much improved j " by the deep fall plowing. If we had i the power and tools necessary to go on j' with this process of bringing up the : ( subsoil to and mixing it with the sur-1 aco foil until we had one foot or mor if mellow soil that had been cnrichci >y turning under repeated clover crops md then under this foot or more c oil we couid run a subsoil plow tw vet deep, and so break the clay to lepth of three feet," the clover root ivould have a chance to bring to th ^ 4hof rmro line rlnt lunucu inu JUUHMJ umv uwn ?*w unot under the surface of our land: Fliis is tlie theory that I have cor itructcd on the experience of a lifetim ts a farmer, and 1 have no doubt of il ipplicability on our lands here.
