POETRY. THE MOUNTAIN BRIDE Upon the mountain's lofty brow, How beautiful ihe nyjpring's'Tay'" ' Entwines around' each bending bough, ~ " Her garlands from the bower of day! His shadows from the temples glide? c' His-tresses, of a thousand trees, "Wave gently, as in joyous pride, Brushed by the morning's perfumed breoze. The mist unfurls its wing and plume, > And soars away with sullen sneers J A%* While, blushing through her vernal bloom, The morning gilds its parting tears, And lays them with such guilesss art Upon the mountain's wreath of flowers, The monarch clasps her to his heart, And makes her queen of all his bowers. Then round the mountain's hardy breast The lovely charmer twines her arms, Nor shudders at her place of rest; And, earless of her growing charms, As in her sapphije home above, She lay within her Father's bosom, ?" * -- " ' :? Moral Courage in Every Day Life.?Have the courage to discharge a debt while you have money in your pocket. Have the courage to do without that which you do not need, however much your eyes covet it. Have the courage to speak your mind, when it is necessary you should do so, and hold your tongue when it is prudent you should do so. Have the courage to make a -will and a just one. Have the courage to tell a man why you will not lend him money. Have the courage to show your re. spect for honesty, in whatever guise it appears; and your contempt for dishonest duplicity, by whomsoever exhibited. Have the courage to wear your old clothes until you pay for new ones. Have the courage to obey your Maker, at the risk of being ridiculed by man. / Have the courage to prefer com fort and propriety to fashion, in all tViinoro Have the courage to acknowledge your ignorance, rather than to seek . credit for knowledge under false pretenses. Have the courage to provide entertainment for your friends, within your means, not beyond. Have the courage to take a paper, and pay for it annually in advance. I'll Keep 'Em Awake.?Near Newark lived a pious family who had adopted an orphan, who, by .the way, was rather underwitted. He had imbibed strict views on religious matters, however, and once asked his adopted mother if she didn't think it. wron for the old farmers to come to church and fall asleep, paying no better regard to the service. She replied she aid. Accordingly before going to church the next Sunday, he filled his pocket with apples. One baldheadcd old man who invariably went to sleep during the sermon, particularly attracted his attention. Seeing him at last nodding, and giving usual evi denceofbeinginthe "land of dreams," he took the astonished sleeper a blow with an apple on the t'op of his bald pate. The minister and aroused congregation at.once- turned round and indignantly gazed at the boy, who merely said to the preacher, as he took another apple in his hand, with a sober, honest expression of coun* tenance, "You preach; I'll keep 'em awake!" Bishop Lynch will be in a few days en route for the Eternal City, to be present, according to the desire of the Holy Father, at the celebration of the eighteen hundredth anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Peter.
