He earnestly, insisted that all that the section of South Carolina, which he represented, desired, was an outlet for the products of their land ftW tied up at home, for waut of a means of transportation tq market, and that end gained, there was po doubt but that North Carolina would reap all the commercial advantages, which must necessarily accrue from having so heavy an amount of foreign and domestic produce poured into 'the port of Wilmington, over and above its present trade. Gen. If. showed conclusively, that while this road cnuld not, by any possibility, ' inflict any injury upon us, it must necessarily be productive of much benefit, by enhancing ^ : the value of the State works, already built, and iii progress, and also by the increased value, ' both iu price and productiveness, of the lauds ' of the comities through which it will pass, on this side of the line. His remarks were all bas"ed upon calculations, made apparently with jjrreat care and accuracy, and in the impressive, ^miguage of figures, appealed strongly and convincingly to the minds of his audience. Gen. H. presented it farther as a Southern measure, touching lightly, but impressively, upon the point, that however matters might hereafter eventuate, it behooved us all, as bound by one ' common tie, one distinctive interest, to see that we were in a position to command our entire resources. After gracefully returning thanks for the kindness and attention shown him, with expressions of regard and good will, both for himself and those he represented, Gen. I Northebn Letter-writers at the South. ?There is nothing so well calculated to deceive the people of the North into the belief of a want of unanimity and of strength which that unanimity gives in the South, as the nefarious 1 representations of northern men with northern j principles and northern feelings, who live at the j South and make all their money at the South, i yet are continually sending home letters which ! paint the distractions of Southern politics in j exaggerated terms, and falsely announce a state ' of peace and harmony with the North and wil. ling submission to Northern oppression which does not exist among us, and which never can while we have one particle of honest pride or patriotism, left us us the bequest of our ancestry. We know that there are many?very ninny Northern men engaged in business at the South havinar their interests, their families and their homes among us, who are as firmly devoted to the great Southern cause as any man can bo who was born on this side of Mason and Dixon's line. These men we love and honor for their gratitude to the soil which gives then) their bread. Butthereare others, moving iu our very midst; wolves in sheep's clothing; who are not to be trusted, and who, by the epistles whicli they write home, and which are published and circulated in the Northern papers, -are lulling the people of the North into a fatal belief that .our threats are mere braggadocio ;|our complaints but fretful murmurs, and that we ourselves could not be forced to leave the Union at any hazard, which showers upon us so many . blessings. Let fuch men be marked, and we heartily join the Savannah Georgian in dubbing them as "The Independent Order of Northern Letter Writers." Public Lands.?The Report ofthe Comrois-1 sinners ol the General l>an(1 Uttice, not yet published, contains full and interesting details respecting the public domain. We learn from the Washington Republic that the whole quantity of lands sold and disposed of during the year 1848, including that located by military bounties, State Selections, Ac., was 4,933,009 acres, amounting, a $1,25 per acre, to 86,428,435. For 1849, 5,184,410 acres were disposed of in like manner, amounting, at the same rate, to 80,575,025. And for the three quarters of 1850, exclusive of the bounty locations not yet returned for the third quarter,2,815,366 acres were disposed of, amounting, at the rate stated, to 83,562,041. A most valuable and interesting item in the report is the statement showing the area and cost of the public lands and revenue derived from them. From thatstatement it appears that the whole area of the public lands exclusive of those in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Utah, the Indian and Nebraska Territories, was 424,103,750 acres. That of these about one fourth have been sold for the sum of 8135,339,092 while the whole eost of every kind to the Government, including the amount paid to France for Louisiana, to Spain for the Floridas, and for the extinguishment of the Indian title, was 874,957,879, making the nett profit to the Government 860,381,213 or au average of nearly one and a quarter millions of dollars annually for the last fifty years. ' Nearly the same amount has been granted in bounties, for works of iuternal improvements Ac. It further appears that the average cost of the public lands, including the purchase, extinguishing the Indian title, surveying, selling,and managing, <kc., is only 21 4 5 cents per acre; while for each acre the Government receives $1 25 per acre?making a net profit of $1 03 1-5 cents per acre. Assassination.?Mr. Royal Wright, a citizen of Columbus, Ga., was killed in that city on Sari'day last by a man named John Robinson, a shoemaker, recently of Atlanta. The murder was committed with a bowie knife, with which three fatal stabs were inflicted.* Mr. Wright was a soldier in the Georgia Regiment, and served twelve months in Mexico. Robinson escaped into Alabama Mblahcholt. ? Some eighteen months since a large and interesting family from Eastern Vir. ginia passed through this place, on their way to the West. Taking a boat at this port, they soon reached St Louis, and there encountered the cholera, jnst when that scourge had begun its awful ravages in that quarter. The others ptoh$d forward into the interior of Missouri, hoping to escape the plague as they moved inland. Vain hope! With new lands they found new diseases, which baffled the best skill and efforts of their medical attendants. Death again and again invaded that once happy and healthy family circle, and finding continued residence on the prairies attended by almost constant sickness, the father finally resolved to return to the home of his youth. Accordingly, last week, the stricken remnant of emigrants again passed through our town; this time wending their way Eastward, and preferring Fairfax to the best soil of the "western paradise '?having been taught by bitter experience to choose health and happiness rather than woalth and the draw-backs of disease and death, by which the latter is too frequently accompanied.?Parker sburg{ Va.)Gaxelte.
