' uvarrr v 'out of the State as a slave for not less than 10, no'r'more than 20 years. If the North will ^ 'come up to that, they may yet save the Union. and enable us to dwell together as brethren in ^^^-unity. Such, however, is the fanatical spirit pervades large masses of her people, tliat ^^H^iey-would set Constitution, Union and all at ^^^do.fiance, rather than abate one jot of their wieked'^Wensions; and hence the South has no ;altMa^|tive left but to withdraw from the pale 'of toe Union. She has all the elements of wealth and property to make her a great nation jier se, and she can leave the North to pursue her own.jprstem "of free labor, and the reduction *of the whiQe working man below the condition of the slavfe, in point of physical comfort and 'ease. . \ For long years I cherished for the Union a regard amounting almost to idolatry, and now I can safely say,-did that regard cease until I ! saw the systematic attempts of the unprincipled fanatics to war upon the property of the South unchecked by the Legislatures of the free States. From, that hour I saw the Union would work toothing but tyranny, and the longer the South Yemaiucd in it thojuore dangerousto her rights. -I;honestly and fearlessly maintain that the 15 tohveholJing States should make a common <ca?ise and secede, and that so far from its leading^tocivil war and dire horror,! conscientiously, believe it would be attended with the huppi'est results to both sections. y THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE.
