Bigland, in his Natural History of Animals, says, "The Badger is a very inoffensive animal; and although Nature has furnished it with offensive weapons of the most formidable kind, it never uses them but for the purpose of defence. , - Whan attacked, however, it employs all its .. powers of resistance and defends itself with the . most desperate obstinacy." Having quoted the above passage by way of an introduction to my subject, 1 will to the best of my ability proceed to compare the animal alluded to, with the Senator of the same name; 1 refer to the Hon. Ceorge E, Badger. To do this I must tirst show who is his Political Maker, what powers he has been invested with, and how he has used those powers in repelling the attacks of the North upon the South and her Institutions. Carolina, and opposed to most of the .principles of the Whig Party, to which latter Pilose gentlemen belong, and to which they are iudehted for their elevated positions, I shall em nleavor to deal with them as Senators, and not Tisit their sius upon their Party. The Whig Party or* North Carolina, for that is the State they represent in the U. S. Senate, may he called their Political Maker; and though elected bv a Party their specific duties are to the whole State. They have been fully endowed with the power of defendiug their State and the Constitution of the United States against unjust or illegal innovations; they are bound ill duty and in honor to attend at nil times, and to oppose any measure that conflicts with that i . , j_ Constitution, or wlucti tends ro oegruue.uiauuior, or rob ode portion of this Confederacy fcr the aggrandizement of the other; and they are bound to use every effort to secure the rights of their constituents, and preserve them inviolate. In plainer terms we might say. to defend j the rights of the Southern j>eople from the encroachments of the Northern; for at this juncture there is a wide breach between us, and he who is not for us must be against us; there is lio neutral ground. I will now endeavor to show that these gentlemen Lave not done their duty. That they have not defended our rights against the Aboli * tionistsand Freesjilers, and " higher law" fanatics of the Northern and New England States; and in doing so I will he obliged to introduce 4*a few more of the same sort" On the 9th iust, Mr. Pearce's Bill for brining Texas with 810,000,000, was finally passed; among those who voted for the Bribe Bill, Mr. Badger's name stands No. 1., Mr. Mangum was , oat of tlie way, "dodging;" the one assisted , the enemy, the other shrunk from his duty. It is not a little surprising to notice among the friends of that Bill the names of Messrs. Bell, Berrien, Clemens, Dawson, Rusk, Spruance, ' and Wafes; bnt it is equally a matter of surprise to see among its opponents the names <,f Messrs. Baldwin of Connecticut, Chase of Ohio, Dodge, Ewing, Hale,"and even Seirnrri, l: |>hani and Walker. This portion of my article needs no comment; you see the position, and can j draw your own conclusions. But again, when the Bill for the admission of California was brought up for filial action, what was their position ? Where "were they to be found ? The answer is, they were not to be found at all, they were both among the missing ? they were "dodging;" the vote was taken and the Bill was passed. What is to be inferred from such conduct ? They only can answer. Or. ti.o inrV. ivlinn ?Ki> Prntpat was airain ta ken up to be disposed of, Mr. Badger having time to see how the '"land lay" voted to lay it j on the table. Mr. Mangum dodging again.? J Mr. Downs voted the same as Mr. Badger, but j we leave him in the bands of the citizens ofj Bienville. I have not. heretofore made any alInsio 1 to Mr. Houston or Mr. Foote in thiseonnectiou because in my humble opinion they have become too insignificant. Now I contend that Messrs. Badger and Mangain had a perfect knowledge of what their State required of them. Have they done it i Have they defended the rights of the South t of i their native State I No. On the Texas Ques- I tion Mr. B. voted contrary to the implied wishes of his State: Mr. M. in not voting at all, and beincr out of his place was equally culpable.? On the California question thev neglected to use the means of defence they are endowed with, and onr.enemies triumphed. Suppose on this last Bill, Messrs. Bell, Benton, Houston, Spruance,Underwood, Wales. Borland, Downs, Pierce, Man ruin and Badger had voted in the negative, how would the case have stood ? It would have stood thus: tor the Bill 28, against it 29. A few words more and I have done. In a former article which you were good enough to .admit into your columns, I said that Mr. Rusk was a patriot and a faithful Senator, and wished him better company than Sam Houston ; I must now recall at least two thirds of that, for I had not then noticed particularly his vote on the Texas Bribe Bill. Since I have, I must say he is none too good for even such company as S.un Houston if such is his choice. Every day shows us our friends and exposes our enemies, let us pay a just tribute to the one and keep our eyes tixed on the other. To Messrs. Butler and Barnwell, South Carolina looks as to her political Moses and Aaron. May they be endowed with power from on high to bear the ark of our Constitution safely through the Red Sea of Northern Fanaticism. Yours &c. A Thub Soutiikon. Singleton's Big Lake j Imitation is nearly submerged, as are also several others. One gentleman, we are informed, calculates his loss at not less than 413,000 and this is supposed a low estimate for the damage. A few days will afford more definite information. The telegraphic communication, North and South, has been interrupted by trees falling over the wires, as well as the blowing down of post6.?South Carolinian. CIRCULAR. To the citizens of each District throughout the State of South-Carolina. At a meeting of the citizens of Richland District held this day, the following resolution, among others, was adopted: "Resolved, That the meeting recommend to our sister Districts the formation of Southern Rights Associations within their respective limits, and that the Secretaries of this meeting be required to convey said request to such persons as they may think appropriate in the several Districts of the State.
