We left Washington yesterday morning at
eight o'clock, with the remains ofour illustrious
Senator. The fuueral cortege, composed of the
relatives of thedeseascd, the Committee of the
Senate, Mr. Venahle of North Carolina, and
South Carolina delegation in Congress, were
escoited to the beautiful steamer Baltimore.?

We landed at Acquia Creek, and were received
by the Fredericksburg and Richmond
Committees, and a military company, the band
playing a dirge. At Fredericksburg we were

bells of the churches tolled until the departure
of the cars. Their military company proceeded
along with us to Richmond. Ample refreshmcpts
were provided for us at one of the
stations by the Richmond Committee, and the
greatest interest and respect were manifested
along the entire line of the road.
At Richmond we were received with the
highesthonors by the Governor of the State, and
the citizens. A civic and military procession
was formed and we proceed to the State House,
where the body, with much solemnity, was delivered
to the care of the Governor, and, after

The Committees were conducted to the Excliauge
Hotel, where they received the attentions
ol the biost distinguished men of the State
who had been invited by the governor from all
quarters to do hotior to the occasion.
At dinner the Hon. John Y. Mason formerly
Secretary of the Navy, presided. In some brief

"the memoir of John C. Calhoun." Air.
Raven el responded in a short but highly eloquent
speech. It was worthy of the occusiou,
and a model of its kind. He proposed " The
birth olacc of Washington." The company adjourned
at an early hour.
On Tuesday morning we were conducted to
the State House, where a feeling and tasteful
address was made by hisExcelleucy Gov. Floyd
on recommitting the body to our charge. He
was replied to by Senator Mason and Mr. Rnvenel
on behalf of the Committees. After the
jierformance of religious services, we were escorted
to thV cars by a' military and civic procession.
l*he streets and windows were thronged
with spectators, while minute guns were tired
during our passage tsrougn me cuy.
We were conveyed in a sprecial traiu to
Petersburg, . where we were received by the
Mayor and a large body of citizens and military.
A procession was formed, the Committee in car
riages, and passed through the principal streets,
the stores being ciosed, and some of them having
badges of mourning, while the sidewalks
and windows were crowded with spectators.
Having reached St Paul's Church, the body
was committed to the charge of the authorities,
and deposited therein. The Committee then

In obedience to these resolutions, we beg

condition of your affairs; and we hope it will
have the effect of convincing you that the calling
in of the remaining instalments is a measure

This is the difficulty with which we have to
contend. The Hoard caused an elaborate report
to be prepared and submitted to them by
tliis Committee; and though predetermined
against calling in the instalments, alter a careful
consideration of that report, and patient in
vestigation and discussion of the subject in all
its bearings, their judgment became entirely
I convinced that it was a measure imperatively
demanded by the emergency, and strongly sus'

conclusions, the Board have instructed us, in announcing
the call of the instalments, to apprise

will inspire you, as it has them, with renewed

their views does not permit them to encourago

that it is very far from unreasonable to expect
that the income will be greater, and the
expenses less, than the sums stated in the foregoing
estimate : results that would, of course,
materially enlarge the dividends, particularly as
the interest on the permanent debt would be

and Manchester Roads, and by the Roads
in Upper Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee,

Road, must, hereafter, result from their completion.
The extent of the future increase of income
from these sources, we do not pretend to *
estimate; but every intelligent mind will perceive
its bearing upon the present value of our
shares.
With these results in prospect, not a share
ought to be sold at any sacrifice, nor should necessity
force any to make such sacrifices.?
Money is abundant everywhere, and cannot bo
scarce here. This is a great public work, in
which the State, the City, and many of our
Banks and other public institutions, are largely
interested; and those private stockholders who
require some aid to meet this call, cannot, under
such circumstances, and at such a time, fail
to obtain it. In order to facilitate the payments
as much as possible, the calls will bo made as.
