The Picayune of Sunday has an article expressing our own views upon the following tele* graphic report from Washington : "It is now thought that California will Ik* admitted into the Union, ami the compromise postponed to the next meeting." We entirely agree with our eoteinpor.iry in distrusting the correctness of this opinion. Every view which lias been taken of the subject by the South and her friends, embraces in it > scope a settlement of all the questions involved. If there is any one feature in the controversy that has stood out in bolder relief than another?if there is a single point that the South has iusi-ted 011 as a sine qua nan, it is, that there should be no open questions as to slavery transmitted as a legaey to another Congress, nor to another session of this Congress. With California, or without her, as a State, in the next Congress, we shall 1k? weaker than we are now in the popular branch. All the questions can he settled now as well as at any suhsequnt jteriod, nay, better, far letter. Admit California and postpone the rest,'and it would carry on its face an impress of fraud and a determination to oppose the South when they have more strength to effect it. Such a coarse would inspire the South with phrenzy that would appal the stoutest heart After such a consumation, the question whether to secede from the Union, would he a very useless inquiry. Quite another question, fully coming up to the darkest picture of revolution that Mr. Webster has ever painted, would he raised. But we trust there is.no foundation for the opinion. If true feeling 011 the subject at Washington is indicated hy what appears on the surface?if there is no concealed undercurrent, who.se object is to hoodwink and deceive the South, the question will bo settled amicably and honorably to both extremes of the Union. But how'powerfully does the uncertainty I which invests our fate, plead v. ith us not to ! abate one jot or title of our preparations for re- j sistance. Our enemy is that unscrupulous despot, Kipg Numbers. Our union, Hruinoss, and ( determination has brought him to a stand. If! we falter in our purpose, if we disband our forces J all will be lost.
