Wasiiixotox, Felt. 10. The Representatives from the State of Cali- I foruia are here. I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Gwin, Senator elect, this morning. The Rep. resentatives elect, Mr. Wright and Mr. Gilbert, are here. Col. Fremont is unhappily detained at Panama, by the illness of his wife, and 1 re- ! gret to learn that she was thought to be in dan- j ger. The Representatives from California have ! luul a long road to travel to this seat of govern- j inent; but they will have a longer road and a ! rougher one, I tear to travel nejore iiiev get t ieir seats. I am bound to state facts, however disagreeable they may he to the narrator. The propositions and discussions on t!ie subject of slavery hero tend not to conciliation, but to exasperation, I know of no compromise which has lieen suggested, that will heal the wounds al ready inflicted?none that will not aggravate them. The prospect is, that the Southern men, or, rather, a majority of them, will resist appropriations, after the revenue and census hills, until the whole subject in controversy he settled. I have stated this before. Hut lest you should deem it a mere suggestion, elicited from the heat of excited discussion, I may state that Mr. Clingman, yesterday, announced to his friends, among whom was the writer of this, that the propositions made in his speech would he carried out?that he was certain that lie had I'orty-tive members to go with him. If, said he, we have a collision, we do not menu to have the whole army and navy against us. Mr. Cliugmau is, by. some of his Southern friends, considered as rash and extravagant; hut, I must say, that, in view of his whole course and object, he is right. Ilis object is to show to the Northern men that the South is in earnest; and I know that he has brought Northern men to a stand. He takes the only course which can preserve the Union, or rather the harmony of the Union; for dissolution, other than theoretical, cannot take place, at least, without civil war. I am happy to turn from tills view to another, flin ic ?l U'!l Imil t11 f r f(l ? pro|>er sense of the danger and difficulties of the crisis. A Northern Senator shewed to me, today, a number of his letters from various parts of the country?all of which deprecated the W'ilmot Proviso, or any kindred measures. I re:nl one verv nlilo letter from a Western Judge, an old Federalist, which was as sound as ! it was lucid, in exposition of constitutional principles, on this subject; and going far ahead of Mr. Clay, he shows that the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia is unc.nnxii.'ulioiitiL 1 read letters, too, from prominent Whigs, which are fraught with just sentiments. 1 notice, how- ! ever, that there is a leaning on the part of the | northern Whigs towards (ion. Taylor's policy.. One letter is from a source which 1 respect, and , 1 give the following sentence from it, to wit: \ e? / o * "As hopeful as you are, always, of the preva-1 lence of the better impulses of men, you will scarcely anticipate so thorough a determination of all the well disposed among us, to take a more truly national position on questions connected with slavery." This is from a Whig, and to a Whig. A Pennsylvania Democratic member offered to show me. to-dav. numbers of letters. The Northern men with whom I converse, nil! say that they are urged to go against the Wil loot Proviso, and not one letter have they received in favor of it. I except, of course, the small i faction of Abolitionists, of whom I know nothing, other than the rumor, in the papers, that they are getting up a convention, to meet in June. He assured that no Wihnot Proviso can pass the House, to say nothing of the Senate. But, to turn again to Southern views. I have heard of a letter, and I do not feel at liberty to say any thing of the parties to it, which exhibits, in a definite manner, the views and intcn-1 tions of the South. in.:.. ... ..r \t? /?.,n \. r..: i . I A Ills* linn iiuagi ownii; wi .ua, \ <iii(uiiii iiiv nun ; culled upon him, for the purpose of saying that the Senate would cheerfully assign to him any time that he would designate tor the purpose of K|>euking. Mr. Calhoun replied that lie felt able to sjK'ak now, but he thought it better to defer jt for a few days. He did not wish, lie said, to Cv niiif miii Ho tfk nvnrnec l>S*s i" iiiy ?"<v. .......... ... owiKviews. He renim U?-<1 that lie was now satisfied that the people of the South were ahead i of their leaders in movements on this subject. The Senators indicati <! by Mr. Hutler, in his ' sjieeeh, as those who i initiated the Southern .Address, last winter, we.e Mr. Hunter, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Turney. 'lie Revenue Collection Hill has been a fruitful source of debate in the House. Mr. Holmes, of So. ('a., has taken a prominent part in it, and in support of the commercial interests. The bill will be disposed of to-morrow. This world is indeed a world of pain, disease and death, and were it not for the improvements constantly taking place in the medical science, which lend to mi. ligate those sufferings, lije would almost tease to he a h!e>sing.
