r ronly from collecting such claims. Mr. Venahle is a gentleman of weight and influence in North Carolina, and his advocacy 1 of such extreme measures, amounting in fact to ( a virtual dissolution of the Union, proves that South Carolina Is by no means in adcanee of her Southeri) sisters in this matter as has been pretended.--"Columbia Telegraph. From the Columbus (GaO Emjuirer, 27th ult. A NEW PROPOSITION. j We take pleasure in calling the attention of _ _ our readers to the proposition of Robert R. Howard, Esq., which will be found in this day's paper. California is now attracting the ^ attention of tho whole country, and receiving emigrants from every section ; if the people of the South, therefore, desire to participate in any of the advantages derived from its acquisi. tion, they will have in some way to join in its settlement in order to have a voice in the enactment of its fundamental laws. When she adopts her Consiituiton, she will, as a State, have the right and power to regulate tho sub. ject of slavery as she pleases, and if, at that time, there are no slaveholders there the insti. tulinn will of course he prohibited. The plan suggested Ijy Mr. Howard, is to us ?. n new one, T>ut it appears to us that as a matter of prudence and Safety, if slaveholders go to California at all, they should go in strength enough to secure themselves and their property from all illegal interference. We believe that the South bas an undoubted right to participate in all the advantages secured to the common country by the Common blood and common treasure of the people, and that our cilizpns should avail themselves of these advantages in 'm. every legal way. The proposition before us '* seeks to secure to those, who embrace it, an equality of rigbu, and. at the same time an ^ exemption from anticipated wrong. Having reflected but little on the practice1?ility of the plan suggested, we can do but little more than submit it to our readers, and commend it to ihe consideration of those who are anxious to emigrate te the land of gold. FOR CALIFORNIA. mi f _AiPrtli/UrnLnt _ I nc aesiro IU CIIUKIaic iu vmuui??> sometime been manifested by a number of the young men of Georgia, but for want of concert and co-operation, only a few have yet inrlulged their inclination*. That we have the right, in -common with our fellow citizen* in other sec(ions of the Union, to participate in all the ad vantages presented by that rich Territory to the industrious and enterprising, is a proposition -which admits of ho doubt or legal difficulties in the opinion ojf intelligent men. And those -of us who wish to emigrate to, or visit the cour. <ry for the purpose of sharing the gold, whii h ' from all accounts must be abundant; or for enjoyment ?f any other privilege which the country affords, should not be deterred by tri. fling ohsl'acte*. To be successful, we must lave strength, which can only be secured by associating in sufficient numbers for personal security, and for the protection of private pro. pcrty against all ordinary encroachments. To faciliate these objects, I propose to all who are disposed to visit or emigrate to Call. fornia, an organization which, in the absence U of Law, alone can secure to them the full * 'i- "t j Ienjoymew or iocir coiouimiunai m?u>?. 1st. It is proposed to a?sociat? in a large company, say from three to five hundred men. if there be that number in the State disposed to engage in the expedition. 2d. That no man be permitted to join, who is not physically capable of enduring privations and hardships, and it is indispensable to the success of the undertaking, that each member be a man of integrity, sobriety and courage. 8-1. That each member shall take with him at least one. and not more than four male slave*. ^ ' 4tb- That each member supply himself with ample means of defraying the expenses of him self and his negroes on the route, and for three months after reaching the gold mines. 5th. To sedur^ to individual industry and *" enterprise their just reward, it is proposed that earh member, after reaching the place of destination, select Ihr himself such employment as may be congenial with his tas'e or talents, but the Association shall continue fur one year after arriving in California, fur the purpose of promptly protecting and defending the persons and property of its members. 6th. That in the event of sickness of nnv member, it shall be the duty of the whole Association to consult his comfort and safety, and in case of his death, to take rare of his property, and return if, together with what he mav have acquired, to his legal representatives. 7th. For the purpose of preserving order, and proceeding with system and efficiency, it r is proposed that the association form itself into a semi-military" corps, by electing officers or leaders, and pledging themselves individually ' and collectively, to be governed by the rules, which they shall enact in general council before setting out on the journey. 8th. The object being to enjoy the rights in , common with- tuber citizens, in a Territory which belongs to the people of the United States, without distinction of sections, it is proper they should be well armed, and whilst abstaining from all innovations upon tho rights of any. one, be prepared to repel any and all aggressions. > * Strongly impressed with the belief, that such a company could establish themselves in a delightful region, without conflict with adverse interests, and amass for each individual a large amount of gold, I propose fur all who are indined to engage In sticb an enterprise, to meet at Miliedgeville, on the first day of May next, and if a sufficient number tie present, a? shall In their judgment he capable of defending themselves and tbeir property, then to form a Constitution which every member shall pledge himself to support, and make such other ' arrangements as will enable the company to march at an early day thereafter, by the most practicable orerland route to San Franci?co. Departed this life on the ISth nit., at hit residence in Lancaster District, Dr. William S. Connors, in the 2-tth year of his age. Painful as it always is to record the death of any relative or friend, still there are cases where the pain is greater, the affliction more intense. In a case like the present where one is removed from us, a young man ju<t in the prime of life, in a sphere of usefulness which cannot be filled, adored by relatives and beloved by friends, a pang is inflicted which only a long space of time can eradicate Dut a few short month* before this *a<l ami melancholy event, God in his providence saw fit to take from our mid-t a loving husband?a find and affectionate father. In this sad bereavement although it appeared that no one could supply hi* place?'.hat Providence who holds the destinies of man, provided in his eldest son. William, a substitute who well supplied his place. A widowed m aher's heart was cheered and comforted by the kind attention and fond solicitude of her darling child. Younger brothers and sisters looked up to him not only as a brother, hut a* a father and brother. Kind and attentive, manifesting by Itii actions a. desire to assist and plea?e all. his companions loved him. and never by word or deed did he wound the feelings of any mortal. The writer of this article had found by a familiar intercourse with the deoeased, that he was a friend, a firm an I devoted friend. Accompanving him in all hi* walks and riles, participating wiih him in all the rural sport* in woods and fields, a friendship was cemented, a companionship formed which only death could sever. Lively and animated in his conversation, affectionate in his manner, I loved him. I loved him with a warm and ardent love. Though he was connected with no i hristian Church, we have reason to hope and believe that he had sought and found favor from his God. When asked by a devoted sister a short lime before his death if" he had prayed to God during his illness, though unable to speak, he gave, by the inclining of hit head, token of assent. 80 died our beloved fr'end, our dear companion. Shall we complain 1 Shall we murmur against our wise Creator!?No! Let his will be done. Oh! may a widowed mother find comfort from 0:1 high, and seeking aid from God, find tliat consolation which the world can never give, nor take away, '-ay brothers and sisters he admonished of the uncertainty of life, and by giving their hearts earlv to God, be ready and willing whenever death shhll call thcra May we all find comfort and joy in those beautiful lines?
