the China, Mail of the 11th of December says,
it is reported by respectable Chinese, that on
landing, the villagers surrounded their victims,
U strong party intercepting their retreat to the
boat. An attack was made with stones, and a
gentleman being struck on the mouth and severely
injured, drew a pistol and shot one of tho
assailants. More shots were fired, and it is
said that from three to five Chinese were killed.

The others fled, and were hunted from village
tp village until they were all destroyed. Another
report says they took refuge in a Joss
house, and were taken out and deliberately decapitated.
The Mail adds: "The conviction presses itfcelfupon
us that we must either abandon CanIon
entirely or a Pot linger or a Napier must
scourge. this headstrong, blood thirsty race until
|hey humbly sue f?r pardon."
Doubtless BritjIi policy will not fail to make
the host use, now as heretofore, of so good an
opportunity to secure a stronger loot hold upon
the Chinese territory, rights, &c. These indiscretion*
of the Chinese are fortunate accidents
for John Bull, and will but enable him the sooner
to accomplish his aggressive and selfish defcigncs
in that quarter.
A let er in the Patriot, however, from Canton
J)er. 12, says: "That Sir John Davis' force

Innocent and amiable youth, she has only gone be
fore them as an invited guest to a most glorious
and happy feast of love.

The Opinion of a Congressman,
The following is from the Honorable Lewis C. T^vin,
Member of Congress, from the First Congressional District
Pa., niul formerly Editor of the Philadelphia Sun:?
'"It lias been said, that we were influenced by selfish considerations,
in bearing our testimony in favour of "Javnk's
Expectorant,'' and that as a reward for our services, he
pap largely as an Advertiser in the Sun. Now, long before
the Editor's connection with this pajier commenced, he
hod been relieved front hoarseness and oppression of the
chest, by the use of this unrivalled remedy, and from a sense
of duty, recommended it to the public. At that time, he
had not the most remote idea of editing a daily paper; and
Dr. Jayne gives a preference to the Sun, not only on account
of its large and rapidly increasing circulation, but been use
the paper opens to the Advertiser a new class of readers win >
were never in the habit of taking the daily penny papers of
the city. In hearing our humble testimony to the virtues of
the Expectorant, we do not stand alone Thousands in the
city attest its curative jsiwers, and although opposed to the
use of what is termed "Quack medicine," generally, yet.
when as in this case, we have felt the benefit of the remedy
when, as we freely acknowledge, we keep it constantly in
our family, as a certain and prompt remedy for Croup or

various kinds, and almost every fruit that comes to
perfection in this climate. It is believed to be
one of the most desirable tracts of land in the
country, not only on account, of the land, improvements,

It is offered for sale at a less price and on better
terms, than any such improvements and land arc
being offered at in the country.
